Burnside Symphony Orchestra
The Burnside Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra based in the Burnside Council area in Adelaide, South Australia. While most concerts presented are in the Burnside Ballroom at the Burnside Town Hall, the orchestra often repeats performances outside the Adelaide metropolitan area offering rural towns the chance to hear live performances of popular classical music.[1]
History
The orchestra was formed in 1956 to encourage amateur musicians, aspiring soloists and conductors to gain experience in performing symphonic repertoire with a full orchestra.[2]
Concerts
The orchestra aims to present 4 concerts each year, and performs some programs both at its home venue, the Burnside Ballroom,[3] and at various country venues including Tanunda in the Barossa Valley.[4] Most concerts are presented in support of a local or international charity. Charities have included Save the Children,[5] Burnside Rotary,[6] Royal District Nursing Society and Sailability.[3]
Conductors
The orchestra's current musical director is Philip Paine.[7] From 2010 to 2012 the musical director was Bryan Griffiths.[8] Conductors in the past have included Alwin Kidney, David Cubbin (deceased), Bob Cooper, Jim Ferguson, Alfonse Anthony, Joanna Drimatis,[9] Martin Butler [10] and Kim Worley.[7]
