BtoB (/ˈb.t.b/; Korean: 비투비; acronym for Born to Beat) is a South Korean boy group formed in 2012 by Cube Entertainment. The group consists of Eunkwang, Minhyuk, Changsub, Hyunsik, Peniel, Ilhoon, and Sungjae. The group debuted on March 21, 2012 on M! Countdown with Insane and Imagine.[1] They have released 7 mini-albums and 1 studio album since debut.

Career

Pre-debut

The group was formed by Cube Entertainment. It was stated from the start that Seo Eunkwang, Lee Minhyuk, Lim Hyunsik, Jung Ilhoon and Lee Minwoo were on the list of original members who are waiting to be debuted under the name of "BtoB". They appeared on the JTBC sitcom "I Live in Cheongdam-dong" as an aspiring boy band working towards their debut.[2] However, Lee Minwoo had dropped out of the list of confirmed members after their first appearance on the sitcom and the fact of him not debuting with BtoB had upset many fans. On March 23, 2012, Cube Entertainment had clarified that there are problems with Minwoo's health resulting in him being unable to blend into the group. Adding on, he would still be a trainee under Cube. If he was to recover, he would still get a chance to debut. Minwoo was confirmed to debut as a C-Clown member under Yedang Entertainment.[3]

2012: Born to Beat, Asia Promotions and Press Play

On March 21, the group made their debut in a showcase held in Seoul, which was streamed from their official YouTube channel. They performed their title song "Insane", "Imagine", and various other songs.[4] On March 22, they made their official debut on Mnet's M! Countdown[5] followed by Music Bank, Music Core and Inkigayo. On April 3, 2012 they released their debut album Born to Beat, with songs co-written by Jörgen Elofsson.[6] Their first broadcast was on Mnet's reality program 'Amazon (Idol Master Zone) on April 4.[7] They followed-up with a digital single titled "Father" released on May 3, in conjunction with May being the 'Month of Family'[8] along with a music video. An "Asia Special Edition" of their first mini-album was released on May 23, which contained two new songs: "Father" and "Irresistible Lips", for which a music video was released on the same day.[9]

The release of the Born to Beat 'Asia Special Edition' album marked the official start of their Asia promotions. They kick-started their promotions with a press conference in Singapore along with a promotional event in Bugis Square which attracted a crowd of 800 people.[10] The following day, they performed at Clarke Quay for "Music Matters Live 2012", a five-night festival that featured 40 bands from 18 countries.[11] A month later, they resumed their Asia promotions in Indonesia, participating in an interview with OneTV Asia. In addition, they held their first Indonesian showcase at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Jakarta on June 21, performing for both fans and media officials.[12] They made their debut in Japan with a performance at the "K-Dream Live" concert at Tokyo Dome on July 29 alongside 5 other groups.[13] In addition, the group performed at Sapporo Dome on August 1 for the "K-Pop Nonstop Live 2012 In Sapporo" concert.[14]

Starting September 4, Cube Entertainment released various teaser images and videos for their comeback title track "Wow" and second mini-album.[15][16][17][18] On September 11, 2012 the group released the music video for "Wow" and their second mini album Press Play the day after.[19] On October 18, they started promoting "I Only Know Love" as the follow-up single on M! Countdown [20] followed by performances on other music programs. A music video for the song was released on October 22,[21] which consisted of a montage of the promotional events the group undertook throughout the year.

Following the end of their promotions for "I Only Know Love", the group commenced their overseas activities once again. They started off in Singapore on December 1, performing as part of a line-up for "Sundown Festival 2012", an event that invited solo and group acts from South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.[22] On December 11, the group performed as the opening act for the "2012 Asia Super Showcase" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at Kenanga Wholesale City.[23] The group became the first Korean artist to perform at the Thai Supermodel Concert on December 13 at the Bangkok Convention Center, and later held a press conference with around 70 media outlets.[24]

2013: United Cube Concert, 2nd Confession, Thriller

On February 2, 2013, the group participated in their first United Cube Concert alongside their Cube Entertainment label-mates. The concert took place in Seoul’s Jamsil Indoor Stadium, and attracted over 7,000 fans, local and international.[25] An additional concert was held in Yokohoma, Japan, in which the group sang a cover of Japanese band V6's "Feel Your Breeze" along with their other songs in front of more than 8,000 fans.[26]

On April 3, Cube Entertainment released hints of their second comeback through their official Twitter account, posting pictures from an music video set. Later, their comeback was confirmed, with a release of a digital single on April 10 titled "2nd Confession".[27]

On April 10, the group held their first fan-meet in Taiwan for over 1,000 fans. The set-list included a cover of Jay Chou's song "Rainbow".[28] Following their promotions for "2nd Confession", they held two additional fan-meets in Thailand and Cambodia, meeting with around 2,000 fans in total.[29][30]

On August 23, Cube Entertainment released concept pictures for their pre-release track, "When I Was Your Man".[31] with a special music video for the song released a few days later.[32] Their first comeback stage was confirmed to be on September 4's episode of MBC Music's Show Champion, prior to the release of their 3rd mini-album titled Thriller on September 9.[33]

2014: Beep Beep, Move, first solo concert, Japanese debut, and The Winter Tale

On January 2014, BTOB released an image with the words "Ddui Ddui Bbang Bbang" (which refers to sounds of cars and horn noise), hinting their comeback in February. On February 11, 2014, the first teaser of their title song Beep Beep was uploaded onto their official YouTube channel followed by the second and third teaser, which were uploaded on February 12 and 13 respectively.[34] On February 16, 2014, the music video for Beep Beep was released onto YouTube followed by the release of the EP the following day.[35][36] Shortly after the EP was released, BTOB's Beep Beep was number 1 on Hanteo’s real-time charts at 3:00 PM KST.[37] Their EP was also ranked in the top three positions on major online real-time charts such as Bugs and Soribada.[38]

BTOB began promotional appearances on Mnet's M!Countdown on February 20, 2014 and also on other various music programs.[39]

Cube Entertainment announced the release of BTOB's 5th mini album "Move" on September 29 with new logo image. The logo image has heart shaped symbols that represent two capital B’s for BTOB, expressing BTOB’s love for the fans and its desire to present heart touching music.[40]

BTOB’s held their first-ever solo concert in Korea, "Hello Melody" on October 31 and November 1, 2014 at Olympic Park’s Olympic Hall.[41][42][43][44][45]

BTOB signed a contract with a Japanese talent agency called Kiss Entertainment for its activities in Japan. The entertainment company posted details of showcase events for the promotion of the Japanese version of “Wow,” which took place at the Shibuya branch of Tower Records in November.[46]

After announcing the previous week that they have signed a contract with the Japanese talent agency Kiss Entertainment, the 7-member group from BTOB has revealed that they will be releasing their first single in Japan this November. On October 9, BTOB’s agency has revealed more information about the group’s upcoming Japan debut. “BTOB will release their first Japanese single, ‘WOW,’ on November 12 and will begin active promotions.” The single will include the Japanese version of BTOB’s representative song from 2012, “WOW,” as well as the sweet love song “Second Confession.” [47]

In December, the group announced that they will be releasing a special mini-album for the winter.[48] On December 3, they pre-released the special single and music Video for 'You Can Cry' on YouTube.[49] They released the music video for the sweet song "You Can't Cry" on December 21, 2014 which was the title track of their 6th mini album "The Winter's Tale" and released the EP the other day.[50]

2015: Japanese singles, Complete, I Mean and second solo concert

In early February, it was announced that BTOB would be releasing their first original Japanese single on March 25, titled "Future".[51] BTOB released a short PV for their single on March 21 through their Japanese agency, Kiss Entertainment. After their single release, it and recorded sales of about 70,000 and ranked second on Japan's Oricon Singles Chart. On the same day, their single charted first on the weekly overall chart for Tower Records, Japan's largest scale records store. They continued promoting throughout Japan (Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo) through concerts and various events until March 30.[52]

In mid-June, Cube Entertainment announced that BTOB will be coming back with their first full-length album in the later part of the month. On June 28, 2015, BTOB performed on Naver's 'Starcast on Air' with their title track "It's Okay" for the first time, before the track was officially released. They also performed various other songs such as "Second Confession" and "Summer Romance". On June 29, 2015, BTOB released the music video for "It's Okay" followed by the release of the their first full-length album titled "Complete".[53][54][55] Their third Japanese single, "夏色 MY GIRL" (Summer Color MY GIRL)", was released on August 19, 2015, after the conclusion of their Korean promotions.[56]

In late September, a representative from their label announced that the group is targeting to make a comeback on mid-October with another ballad track and said that the group is currently rushing for preparations.[57][58] On October 12, BTOB released their seventh mini-album, titled I Mean, and the music video for their title song, "Way Back Home" (집으로 가는 길).[59] On October 21, BTOB received their first win after 3 years and 7 months on music show Show Champion, with the song "Way Back Home".[60][61] In November 15, they concluded their promotions on Inkigayo, with their last broadcast performance for "Way Back Home".

It was later revealed that BTOB will be holding their second solo concert "Born to Beat Time" on December 19 and 20 at Seoul's Jangchung Gymnasium with a total of 8,000 crowd. They will perform their hit songs in front of thousand of fans, and performances will also include special stages such as performances from their unit lines.[62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69] "Born to Beat Time" sold-out after 5 minutes of ticket release.[70][71][72]

2016: Dear Bride

On February 3, BtoB released a short preview of their 4th Japanese single, "Dear Bride". The full single will be released on February 26.[73][74][75] BtoB kicked-off their long-awaited Zepp Tour entitled "BTOB Zepp Tour 2016 B-Loved" from February 10–14. They met fans across four cities in Japan including Nagoya, Tokyo, Fukuoka and Namba.[76][77]
