The British School of Nanjing (Chinese: 南京英国学校) is a British Curriculum international school serving the expatriate community in Nanjing for children aged 2 to 16 years (Pre-Nursery to Year 11).

Governance

The school is wholly foreign owned and managed. Daily operations are managed by the Headmaster.

BSN is governed by the British Schools Foundation, a non-profit organisation that aims to promote quality British-style education worldwide. The school is fully registered with the Ministry of Education in China and also is an associate member of the East Asian Association of British International Schools (EAABIS), the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), and is registered with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in the UK (ISN: 1880018).

Curriculum and learning

The school follows the British National Curriculum, which is one of three main internationally recognised curricula. Students who graduate from National Curriculum schools can choose to study in most universities worldwide without requiring to sit additional examinations.

The National Curriculum is known for its clear teaching guidelines, including teaching requirements of minimum teaching hours for subjects as well as guidelines on teaching the gifted and talented.

At the British School of Nanjing, students learn in a differentiated environment whereby their individual abilities are developed through small group learning. This specialised learning is delivered by an experienced, UK qualified teacher and supported by a native English speaking teaching assistant in every classroom.

The school also has a comprehensive Chinese second language programme whereby all students have Chinese lessons daily.

Students who speak English as a second language are assisted through a dedicated EAL programme, which includes multi-level support delivered by specialist teachers.

Student body

BSN opened in August 2007 with Pre-Nursery to Year 5 classes. The school has grown from 30 students to over 190 in its first years of operation. Students are all non-Chinese (PRC) passport holders coming from over 25 nationalities.

The school maintains a strict enrolment policy ensuring a balance of nationalities (all less than 30%) in every class so teachers can uphold international standards in English-intensive subjects, in line with the British National Curriculum.

32% of students at the school come from a native English speaking background from countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Having the highest percentage of native English speaking students of the schools in Nanjing ensures that the British School maintains a well balanced English-medium environment.

Location and facilities

The British School of Nanjing is located in Jiangning District, South of the city of Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. The campus overlooks Baijia Lake and has a full range of indoor and outdoor facilities.
