The British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park (BISC, LP) is a non-sectarian, co-educational college preparatory day school located in the Lincoln Park community area of Chicago, Illinois. BISC offers education for ages 3 to 11 (UK Nursery to Year 13/US Preschool to Grade 12). The school opened in September 2001 and was the fourth school opened in the United States by the British Schools of America. There are five additional schools similar to the British International School of Chicago in various US cities, including New York, Boston, Charlotte, Houston and Washington, D.C.. The British International School of Chicago relocated in 2008 to its current location in Lincoln Park.

The school is well known in the area for the British Music School of Chicago, which offers students and members of the community the chance to take individual and group music lessons.

Enrollment and Student Profile

The British International School of Chicago current enrollment comprises approximately 850 students, with the majority being American. There are over forty nationalities represented at the school. The school serves Nursery School to Year 13 (Preschool to Grade 12).[1]

Curriculum

The British International School of Chicago offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) for students in Years 12 and 13 (Grades 11 and 12) and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in Years 10 and 11 (Grades 9 and 10). The Primary School, which includes Nursery to Year 6 (Pre-K-Grade 5), offers the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and adopts best practices from the Curriculum of England and Wales.[2]

Students at the British International School of Chicago sit externally graded standardised tests in English, Maths, and Science as recommended by the English National Curriculum (England and Wales) at the end of Years 2, 6 and 9. Optional tests are taken at the end of Years 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 in Maths and English. IGCSE and IB students take external examinations at the end of Years 11 and 13.

Teachers

The vast majority of the BISC staff are British and are educated in the United Kingdom. They all hold mainly UK degrees as well as teaching qualifications. Some teaching staff hold Master's degrees.

The school actively promotes the professional development of teaching staff through an ongoing programme of training carried out in the US, UK, and Europe to promote world-class learning practices through adapting and adopting examples of best educational practice from around the world. Whilst the teaching staff are primarily British educated and teach English and Welsh curriculum, courses are designed to reflect a global perspective and the international nature of the student body.

Nationalities

Though the majority of students at the British International School of Chicago are American, the school still hosts over forty different nationalities.

Affiliation and Associations

The British International School of Chicago is accredited as a Learning-Focused School. It is also accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the National Independent Private Schools Association (NIPSA). The school is an active member of the European Council for International Schools (ECIS) and the Council for International Schools in the Americas (CISTA). BSC is also an affiliate member of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS).[3]

The British International Schools are owned by parent company Nord Anglia Education. Founded in 1972, Nord Anglia Education has developed extensive experience of managing schools and working with governments to raise standards and improve educational achievement. Since 1992, Nord Anglia Education has been operating international schools in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, offering a British-style education. Most schools follow a curriculum based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales, adapted country by country to meet local culture and local conditions. The schools offer IGCSEs and the International Baccalaureate plus, in some locations, A-levels, the French Baccalaureate and the Swiss Maturité.[4]

Expansion of School

In December 2013, BISC-SL announced plans to open a second campus in Chicago in the South Loop area. The new building, which hosts students aged 3–18, opened in September 2015.[5]
