Boten is a small town in Laos in the Luang Namtha Province.
Border post
Boten is at the border between Laos and China. It is located opposite to the Chinese town Mohan. While Boten is part of Laos, most of its inhabitants speak Mandarin Chinese as their native language.
Casino
In 2002, a casino and several large hotels were built in Boten. The casino mainly attracted Chinese visitors, because gambling is illegal in China.
In 2011 after pressure from the Chinese government the casino was shut down. According to media reports the casino owner held Chinese customers that couldn't pay their liabilities as hostages.[1][2] Today the casino and most hotels are abandoned.
