Nagda is a city in Ujjain district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is an industrial town in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh and is situated on the bank of Chambal River.
The name of the town was actually nag-dah which means cremation/burning (dah) of snakes (nag). The ancient city was developed by king Janmejay. Janmejay was a Hindu King of Pandava Dynasty. Nagda was mentioned in the literature of Kalidasa. Presently, Nagda is a major industrial town having manufacturing unit of Viscose fibre, thermal power plant and a chemical plant, It is a major ISO granted railway junction on the Delhi–Mumbai railway line. It is exactly 694 km from both Delhi and Mumbai.
Prior to being an industrial town, Nagda was a small village. The location near river Chambal and availability of acres of land attracted Ghanshyam Das Birla to set up a major facility. Today Nagda is one of the largest viscose staple fiber manufacturers in Asia.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[1] Nagda had a population of 116,525. Nagda has an average literacy rate of 81.16%, above than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy is 89.47%, and female literacy is 73.37%. In Nagda, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Nagda represents great culture of Malwa. The culture of Nagda encompasses both the traditional Malwa culture and a modern, progressive People from multiple religions and speaking different regional languages reside here. It also hosts various events throughout the year.
People
Generally people of Nagda are humble and food lovers. There are many places where people do gossip all the day. They keep keen observation on the political and social issues. Most of the people are very aggressive and emotional on the political topics and social issues. Today, Nagda has a diverse industrial population from other states like UP and Bihar. Most of them are factory workers. Most of the people belong to lower middle class who believe on hard work and social justice.
Festivals
People of the Nagda are very religious. They take part in the religious activity with full of joy. People celebrate every festival like Diwali, Dussehra, Navratri, Holi, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Mahavir Jayanti Hanuma jayanti & Christmas. Most of the celebrations during festivals take place in Grasim Staff Club. Apart away of these festivals city celebrates “Dhol Gyaras”( Dhol is the musical instrument like drum) and gyaras(Ekadasi) with joy. Dhol gyaras celebrates just prior of on Anant Chaturdashi. It is a one night event in which mobile temples run in the city that called झान्की (jhanki) in the local language. The set of the pehalwans from different Akhara show their bravery in the front of the mobile temples. Bunch of Dhol artists play their drums in a continues rhythms. Festival culminates in a carnival-like procession where people dance, play and enjoy whole night.
Religion
Hinduism is the dominant religion in Nagda. Many temples and Masjids, Jain temples,Catholic church and other religious buildings are found throughout the city. The most prominent communities include Rajpoot, Gurjar, Brahmin, Marwaris, Viswakarma, Marwari Jains, along with the local communities. The most prominent Hindu temple in Nagda is Birla Mandir dedicated to Lord Vishnu which was built by the Birla family.
Food & Cuisines
Nagda has a variety of foods and cuisines. City starts its day with the Tea, Poha, Jalebi, Samosa & kachodi. The Ratlami Sev is a common snacks often serves with meal and dinner. Dal baati is the food of the MALWA. It is commonly served at all festivities, including religious occasions, wedding ceremonies, and parties . "Dal-Baati ", is a combination of two different food items - Dal (lentils), Baati. It is a typical Malwa dish. Dal is made of lentils and can be little spicy. Baati baked or a grilled ball of wheat flour dough. Ghee is an important ingredient in all the two items.
Social Activities
People of city often show their commitments and interests in the social welfare and social activities. A guy has taken initiative of cleaning Chambal River alone by himself and Currently bunch of NGO’s like SNEH (Special Need Education Home), Social welfare clubs like Lions Club Nagda are being run in city since many years & Rajsthan Navuvak Mandal working from last 45 years. Apart away of them many local platforms like “Kirana Vayapari Sang”,”Jeevdaya Manav Smiti” are also available which represent their commitments towards the mankind. These clubs are conducting various charity programs like 'Rehabilitation camps','Free heath checkups', 'Blood banks','Free distribution of Handicapped Tricycle for disabled people','Water huts','Free Study material distribution for poor children's','Free food facility in the hospitals' &'Free blanket distribution program for homeless people' etc.
Education
The people of Nagda are very conscious about the education of their children. The city has many schools.
Higher Education
Most colleges in Nagda are affiliated to the Vikram University . The city's most prominent college is “Nagda Government College” near Rupeta village.
Jobs
The main source of the jobs is Grasim industries. Apart from jobs people do own business like retail stores . Nagda has sufficient numbers of transports corporations and firms to fulfill demand and supply of industrial raw materials in the area. Youth’s of the city have to go outside for higher study and job search due to lack of opportunities.
Shopping Centre
Kanthed Trade Centre is one of the most popular shopping centre in heart of the city opposite railway station.
Picnic Spots
Nagda has many good Picnic spots like Birla Mandir, Atal Garden, Banbna Taalab, Mukestewar Mahadev Mandir, DelanPur, & Nayan Dam. Ponds Colony is the main attraction in evening for colony kids and later during night for elders.
Transportation
Railway
Nagda is situated on the basin of river Chambal. It is an important junction station of Western Railways, which connect Delhi-Mumbai main line with Bhopal. It is an important halt for all trains that are bound for Jaipur, Mumbai,Delhi & Bhopal. The main lines passing through Nagda Junction are : • Mumbai- New Delhi line via Kota Junction ( broad gauge line).
Air
Nagda has one Air strip which is rarely used by Grasim Management & Politician at their visit. The nearest airport is located in Indore above 110 km from the city.
Road
The Road Transport has improved a lot after many efforts of local leaders Thaverchand Gehlot (Cabinet minister in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in Narendra Modi's government 2014 )Dilip Gurjar (Ex MLA)& Dilip Shekhawat(MLA).[2] Now Nagda has better and easy connectivity with NH79 via jaora.
