History
Bhavan's Varuna Vidyalaya, a joint venture of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and NPOL, Ministry of Defence, is a senior secondary school affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. The school is situated at Thrikkakara, in the city of Kochi, India.
The school was started in 1992 to cater to the educational requirements of the children of NPOL employees. The school started with 114 students and 10 staff. The school functions under the purview of the Kochi Kendra of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
Academics
The 8th standard batch of 2009 and 2010 recorded a high of six NSTE scholars each.
Today
The school has six other schools in Kochi, which include: Bhavan's Girinagar, Bhavan's Vidya Mandir - Elamakkara, Bhavan's Vidya Mandir - Eroor, Bhavan's Adarsha Vidyalaya, Bhavan's Munshi Vidyashram and Bhavan's Newsprint Vidyalaya.
The school has over 1000 students from classes 1 to 12 who are taught by a teaching staff of over 70. Apart from curricular activities, students are offered training in arts, sports and music.
The motto is the same as that of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan: "Let noble thoughts come to us from every side".
Houses
There are eight houses into which the students are divided, with about five 5 students of each house per class. These houses are named after moral values which the student try to keep. The houses are:
- Ahimsa (Non-Violence)
- Dharma (Justice)
- Jnanam (Knowledge)
- Satyam (Truth)
- Sevanam (Service)
- Shanthi (Peace)
- Thyagam (Sacrifice)
- Vinayam (Humility).
Each house has a captain, vice-captain and a teacher in charge. A period in the weekly time-table of the secondary students is reserved for house-activity, where they join house members from others and hone their skills in debate, chart-making, drama and dance.
Activities
The school hosts an annual cultural event called 'Insignia' conducted by all the 11th graders of the year, which develops their organizational skills. Insignia events include Vinquizzitive (Quiz) and Versetality (Poetry Recitation).
The school hosts an annual interschool Science meet 'Vigyanotsav'. The competitions, including Science exhibitions, Quiz and Model making, aims at bringing out the scientific aptitude in each student. Varuna also conducts the Varuna Cup volleyball tournament and the Varuna Cup chess tournament. The year 2011 also saw Varuna becoming the host school for 'South Zone Bhavan's Youth Festival' and '14th all Kerala CBSE (Cluster VI) Volleyball tournament'.[1] Other activities include the SEED programme under 'Mathrubhumi' which aims at environmental conservation.
Achievements
Students of Bhavans Varuna Vidyalaya were among the top six finalists in the TCS IT Wiz for 2010-11 and 2011-12. In 2010-11, they were the one of the only two teams from Cochin to qualify for the finals[2] .[3]
A student emerged as Chennai regional topper in the CBSE Plus Two exam conducted in 2013 with centum in Physics Maths and Chemistry . Two students secured 2nd and third rank respectively in the Kerala Engineering entrance in 2013 and JEE mains 2013 state category.
