Bethel Presbyterian Church (Abbreviation: BPC; Chinese: 长老会伯特利堂) is one of the earliest Presbyterian church founded in Singapore by the English Presbyterian Mission. It is located at 12 Jalan Lateh in Serangoon area.
The mission of the church is, "Bethel exists to help every person to know Jesus Christ and to nurture them to maturity in Christ."
History
Bethel Presbyterian Church is one of the earliest Presbyterian church founded in Singapore by the English Presbyterian Mission.
In 1903, the church was combined with Tekka Church (now Life Bible-Presbyterian Church) and Bukit Timah Church (now Glory Presbyterian Church) as Siah Tek Church with the Rev Lin Xi appointed as the pastor.[1]
In 1947, Hougang Church directly came under the responsibility of the Synod.
In 1948, Hougang church was officially named Bethel Church.
In 1981, a Preaching Station was started at the All Saints Memorial Chapel and Mr Peter Poon was appointed Preacher.
In 1999, the name of the church was changed from The Chinese Christian Church Bethel Congregation to Bethel Presbyterian Church.[2]
At present, the church has 4 pastors. Three of them are ordained as Reverend. The church also has several elders and deacons who are working together as a working committee.
Ministry
- The Worship Ministry
The Worship Ministry aims to have an integrated worship. An integrated worship is not just in a form of combining the uplifting choruses with the evergreen hymns; but also in terms of gathering people across different age groups, ministers and languages in the act of worship.
Bethel Presbyterian Church is holding three different weekly services.
- English 8.30 a.m. to 10.00 a.m.
- Mandarin 9.00 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.
- Teochew 10.15 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.
- Bilingual (Mandarin/English) 11.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. (@ 5 Poh Huat Road)
- The Cell Ministry
The Cell Ministry aims to educate and shepherd the church members to be a caring, praying and witnessing community. The Cell group is the basic organism for the spiritual growth at Bethel Presbyterian Church. It is a place where the church members grow together holistically as part of the body of Christ and multiply naturally even as they evangelise through the caring environment.
- The Mission and Social Concern Ministry
The Mission and Social Concern Ministry encourages members to express their faith in Christ through acts of love and mercy as well as to participate in Christian witness and missions in order to fulfill the Great Commission.
- The Prayer Ministry
The Prayer Ministry aims to encourage Bethelites to be a praying community.
- The Equipping Ministry
Bethel Presbyterian Church is a growing and learning community where every member is encouraged to grow deeper in his or her understanding and experience of the Christian faith. To this end the Equipping Ministry seeks to help "to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up" by facilitating regular equipping modules and workshops that are Bible-based, interesting and relevant.
- The Hospitality Ministry
The Hospitality Ministry aims to follow Christ in serving to welcome worshippers and to warmly receive visitors so as to help integrate visitors and new members into the life of the Church.
- Ladies' Fellowship
The Ladies' Fellowship exists to help ladies be more devoted to Jesus and to translate this devotion in daily living.
- The Youth Ministry
The Youth Ministry that reaches out the non believing students, connects with other youth believers, grow in their faith, discover their ministry and develop an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Boys' Brigade & Girls' Brigade
- The Children's Ministry
The Children's Ministry partners with parents to nature the children in their walk with God.
