Benedict is a masculine given name. It comes from the Latin benedictus, meaning "blessed"[1] and most commonly refers to Saint Benedict of Nursia, the founder of the Order of Saint Benedict and thereby of Western Monasticism (Benedictine). The Italian equivalent is Benedetto.

The name is considered ostentatious in modern-day Britain. In the United States it is even more uncommon, being associated with the traitor Benedict Arnold.[2]
