The Belgrade Main railway station (Serbian: Железничка станица Београд Главна / Železnička stanica Beograd Glavna) is the main intercity train station in Belgrade, Serbia. It is the busiest train station in the country and a major railway hub in the region. 21 international trains serving 22 large cities serve the station as it is Serbia's largest railway junction. Express trains to other large Serbian cities such as Novi Sad and Niš and regional trains to towns around Belgrade that are not served by Beovoz service. Commuter rail to Belgrade's satellite towns are all served directly from Belgrade Glavna.

After opening of the new Belgrade Center station (Prokop) in January 2016, it was announced that the passenger trains will be gradually relocated to the new station during 2016.[1] The Main station is expected to be closed afterwards, freeing up the space for the Belgrade Waterfront.

History

The station was built between 1881 and 1884 by the Oriental Railway (CO) as part of the Istanbul-Vienna railway. Before the construction of the station was complete, the CO handed ownership of the station to the newly formed Serbian Railways, but operated trains to the station via trackage rights until 1913, when the Oriental Railway ceased operations outside of the Ottoman Empire. In 1974, a plan to rebuild Belgrade's railway infrastructure started and the still under construction Belgrade Central station was to replace Belgrade–Glavna. However these plans have not been fully set into motion.

The Belgrade Main station is located next to the Sava River and a little north of the Mostar interchange as well as the Mostar railway junction.
