Bastien Charles Patrick Héry (born 23 March 1992) is a French professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for League Two club Carlisle United.
Héry started his career at Paris Saint-Germain II, before coming to England to join Sheffield Wednesday’s Development Squad in June 2012. Héry failed to make the breakthrough at Sheffield Wednesday and spent the closing weeks of 2012/13 training with the Rochdale squad. In summer 2013, Héry became Keith Hill’s first signing at Rochdale. Héry found his chances limited in his first season, but emerged as a big influence in the final weeks of the campaign as Rochdale pushed for promotion.
Héry has played internationally for France twice at under-18 level.
Club career
Early career
Born in Brou-sur-Chantereine, France, Héry started playing football when he was six and joined US Torcy. Héry then joined Paris Saint-Germain.[2] Héry revealed he went on a trial at Toulouse, Strasbourg and Auxerre.[3]
After two years at PSG since turning professional,[3] Héry was released by the club before joining English club Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2012.[4] Héry stated it helped him cope leaving the club.[5] However, Héry didn't make an immediate first team breakthrough; instead Héry played in the club's reserve and at the end of the season, Héry was released by the club.[6]
Rochdale
After failing to make an appearance for Wednesday, he joined the League Two side Rochdale on 8 May 2013 on a free transfer.[7] Upon joining Rochdale, Héry was given the number fourteen shirt.[8]
He made his professional debut on 6 August 2013 in a Football League Cup match at Doncaster Rovers.[9] Soon after, Héry spoke about his move to Rochdale, quoting: "Last season at Sheffield Wednesday I only played in the development squad so this is my first experience of first team football and I'm enjoying it. I have learnt more in three months here playing first team football than I did during one year with the development squad."[10] Héry scored his first goal for the club on 12 October 2013, in a 3-0 win over Newport County.[11] After only making twelve appearance that season, Rochdale were promoted to League One. Héry signed a new two-year contract with Rochdale on 27 June 2014.[12]
In 2014-15 season, Héry scored his first goal of the season, in a 3-2 win against Swindon Town on 21 October 2014.[13] In his second season at Rochdale, Héry made twenty-eight appearance and scoring once in all competition, as Rochdale remained in League One for another season. Shortly after the season ended, Héry was placed on the transfer listed.[14] On 24 June 2015, Héry left Rochdale by mutual consent. [15]
Carlisle United
On 24 June 2015, Héry joined League Two side Carlisle United on a one-year contract.[16]
International career
Héry was called up by the France U18 squad in 2009, which described it as a "happy experience".[2]
Personal life
In July 2014, Héry appeared in an episode of Extreme Fishing with Robson Green, where he spoke about his father's roots as a French fisherman. However, Héry denied this claim after being asked in an interview.[3]
In February 2015, Héry caused controversy after making comments describing Rochdale as a "dump".[17] Héry came under criticism from the club's supporters and Labour MP Simon Danczuk and even go far for him being sacked.[18][19] In response to this controversy, Héry apologised for the comment he made, claiming he "mistranslated".[20] To make up the cause, Hery went on a tour of Rochdale.[21]
Héry is known for his distinct haircuts.[22][23]
