Barry J. Beck is the Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Bluemercury and M-61 Laboratories. Mr. Beck founded Bluemercury with his wife Marla Malcolm Beck in 1999. The couple founded M-61 Laboratories in 2012.[1]
Business career
Barry J. Beck co-founded Bluemercury in 1999 in Georgetown, Washington, DC. The business began as an internet-only brand.[2] As of July 2015, Bluemercury has 70 stores throughout the U.S.[3] and has been cited as the fastest growing beauty and spa business in the country.[4] In February 2015, Bluemercury was acquired by Macy's Inc. for $210 million. The company remains headquartered in Washington, D.C.[5]
In 2012, Barry and Marla Beck founded the M-61 Laboratories skincare line.[6] M-61 Laboratories is sold at Bluemercury locations and via Home Shopping Network.[7]
In his role, Mr. Beck is responsible for the overall operations of the company, including finance, real estate and store design and development.[8] Mr. Beck also serves on Bluemercury’s Board of Directors.
Prior to Bluemercury, Mr. Beck was a founder of Tower Systems, Inc., now known as U.S. Maintenance, a contract maintenance business serving national retail chains, which was acquired by Emcor Group (NYSE:EME). Beck received his Bachelor of Science from Cornell University. Mr. Beck currently sits on the Trustee Council of Cornell University, the Advisory Council of Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations, and on the Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.[9]

As a speaker, Mr. Beck has participated in Showcase on Great Consumer Brands at NASDAQ, the Future of Bricks-and-Mortar Retail at the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, Mobile Payment and Omnichannel Retailing at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, and has given talks on the subject of entrepreneurship and innovation at Cornell University and Columbia University Lang Center for Entrepreneurship’s Distinguished Speaker Series.[10]
Personal life
He resides in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife and three children.[11]
