Bargur (also known as Barugur or Barguru) is a town panchayat in Krishnagiri district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The economy is dependent on mango cultivation and oriented processing industries.

Geography

Bargur is located at 12°33′N 78°22′E / 12.55°N 78.37°E / 12.55; 78.37.[1] It has an average elevation of 533 m (1,749 ft).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Bargur had a population of 12,577. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Bargur has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 55% of the males and 45% of females literate. 11% of the population is under 6 years.

Tamil is the official language and Telugu is the majorly spoken language in the town. As per 2001 census , Telugu speakers are 6,621 , Tamil speakers are 5,209. [3]

Education

There is a Government College of Engineering started in 1994 and a Government Women's Arts and Science college at Bargur.

Politics

Bargur assembly constituency is part of Krishnagiri (Lok Sabha constituency).[4]
