Augustus Sol Invictus is an attorney and United States Senate candidate in the 2016 Florida election, running as a Libertarian. Augustus Sol Invictus (Latin for "majestic unconquered sun") is a Roman name that he adopted. He has drawn national attention due to criticism of a goat sacrifice. Invictus is an [independent] Thelemite. He was 32 years old when interviewed in October 2015.[1]
Campaign
In response to Invictus' campaign, Adrian Wyllie resigned from his position as chairman of the Libertarian Party of Florida, calling Invictus a "violent Fascist and Neo-Nazi" whose ideology was incompatible with libertarianism and saying he did not want to be part of the same party. The chairman also accused Invictus of wanting to start a second civil war in the USA, and of supporting eugenics. Invictus responded by admitting he once wrote a paper advocating eugenics but has since changed his mind.[2][3][4][5]
He is a follower of Thelema and a former member of the Ordo Templi Orientis. He changed his name to Augustus Sol Invictus and started a law firm called Imperium Law. In 2013 he renounced the firm, Roman Catholicism, and his law degree[6] and walked from Florida to the Mojave Desert; in a ritual of thanks for his survival, he sacrificed a goat and drank its blood.[7] He denies the party chairman's allegations that he "sadistically dismember[ed]" the goat.[2][4][7]
In 2013 Invictus said that he prophesied for many years that he would either start or be the cause of a "Second American Civil War",[6] and he has issued a call for "total insurrection", stating in his talk:
"I do not want you to vote, so much as I want you to wake up. I want you to drop out and tune in. I want you to take LSD and practice sorcery. I want you to listen to trap music and black metal, to learn the law and to break it deliberately, to find your own religion. I want you to learn the use of firearms and subject yourselves to rigorous physical training. I want you to treat your bodies as Holy Temples and to take your girlfriend to a strip club so you can seduce a dancer in the back room. I want you to worship Nature and dance naked in the moonlight 'round the fire, screaming in ecstatic joy. I want you to revolt. Raise Hell. Break your limitations. Renounce your life and go into the Wilderness, that God may speak to you of things to come."[3]
He has also said that he is not white supremacist, citing the fact that his four children are Hispanic. His campaign has received support from white supremacists.[7] In 2014 he acted as attorney for Marcus Faella of the American Front in his legal appeal.[8]
Invictus claims on his website that he was inspired to become an attorney because at the age of 23 he and his family experienced collateral damage from the DEA. He has said that his father was a criminal defense attorney and taught him many parts of Constitutional law at an early age. He graduated from the University of South Florida with Philosophy honors with a BA. From there he went to DePaul University College of Law and graduated in 2011. He has been admitted to the Bar at Florida, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, and the Middle District of Florida in the US District Court.
On his campaign website the positions he holds are mostly libertarian despite the symbols of the Roman fasces and mentions of the concept of Imperium. He lists his political positions under "Focal Points". He wants the US Government to stop the Drug War and to stop intervening militarily in so many foreign conflicts. He also believes education should be regulated at the state and local levels and that there is too much security invading Americans Civil Liberties. Finally, he believes in abolishing the IRS and in the Non-Aggression Principal.
He also has a section of his website devoted to a short "library". It has a short list of books that have influenced his campaign platform and a summary of why each one has. It has five sections, one on Politics, Foreign Policy, History, Literature, and Philosophy. It encompasses a wide range of multicultural influences, from Anglo-American, to Indian, to Chinese, German, French and many other parts of the world.
