Ashford Hospital, Adelaide

Ashford Hospital is a private hospital, located in the Adelaide suburb of Ashford.

History

Ashford Hospital (originally named Ashford Community Hospital) was opened in 1950 as a joint venture between the Unley, Mitcham, West Torrens and Marion Councils and a group of local doctors.[1] It was the second hospital opened on the same site with Ashford Private Hospital first opening in 1935, which was run by two nursing sisters who sold the hospital to Ashford Community Hospital in 1950.[1]

In 1995, Ashford was the first private hospital in South Australia to open an emergency department which now attends to approximately 20,000 patients each year.

Location

Ashford Hospital is located in the Adelaide suburb of Ashford, approximately two kilometres from the Adelaide CBD along Anzac Highway. It dominates the block between Marleston Avenue, Reid Avenue, Alexander Avenue and Anzac Highway.[2]

ACHA Health

The Adelaide Community Healthcare Alliance (ACHA) was formed on 14 November 1999 with the merger of Ashford and Western Community Hospitals. Since then, ACHA has also incorporated the Memorial Hospital (in North Adelaide) and Finders Private (located next to Flinders Medical Centre) at Bedford Park. Both these mergers occurred in the year 2000.[1] However, in 2004 due to a lack of profitability, the Western Community Hospital was sold and has since become an independent private hospital.
