Arun Kumar Saha (born November 9, 1983) is a Bangladeshi actor and musician. He became famous as a child actor for his role as Dipu in the full-length feature Bangla film Dipu number two (1996) directed by Morshedul Islam.[3] He has received many accolades including the National Film Award[2] as best child actor.

Early life and education

Arun Kumar Saha was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh the son of Anita Saha, a school teacher and Monoranjan Saha, a college teacher. Arun has one elder sister, Kanta. He attended St. Joseph High School in Dhaka[4] and passed SSC examination in 1999. Later he attended the Notre Dame College, Dhaka and passed HSC examination in 2001.[4] In 2006, Arun graduated from the University of Delhi, India with a BE degree in Electrical Engineering.[2][4] In 2014, he earned a MS degree from the University of Dhaka in renewable energy technology.

Filmography

He developed an interest in acting from an early age. In his childhood he was greatly inspired by a theatrical play "Tomrai" by the playwright Abdullah al Mamun. Besides as a child, he was also a big fan of Hollywood action movies which also inspired him to be an actor. In 1995 renowned film director Morshedul Islam announced an audition for the casting of his next film Dipu Number Two.[5][6] It was a government funded, full-length feature film being made especially for the younger population.[5] Despite having no prior experience, Arun signed up for the audition and after several rounds of screening, he was finally chosen as the protagonist. Arun rose to national fame with his lead role as Dipu in the film when it was released in 1996.[1] The film was selected for screening in Focus on Fukuoka International Film Festival, Japan in 1998. Arun, along with the director and co-artist Shubhashis, attended the fastival.

Later he received a National Film Award[1] as best child performer. For his successful portrayal of the vicissitudes of adolescent life, he is more popular as "Dipu" among his fans. After a long break from acting, he recently made a comeback in a telefilm and a television commercial in 2015.[4][7]

Career

From 2006 to 2010 Arun worked in the petroleum sector as a wireline logging field engineer.[2] During this time, the two companies he worked with are HLS Asia Limited and Weatherford International. During his tenure he was posted at various locations in India, Bangladesh, Germany and U.A.E.[2]

Music

Arun is also an aspiring musician. His early inspiration came from listening to Tagore songs which his father used to admire. At present he plays the classical guitar[8] which he learned from noted Bosnian classical guitarist Denis Azabagic[2][9] in India and Iftekhar Anwar in Bangladesh. Arun is also a self-taught trumpeter.[8] He has performed orchestral music with the Classical Music Academy of Dhaka in different venues such as Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts),[9] Chhayanaut etc. Since 2013, Arun has also been performing in two of Bangladesh Television's programs called Oikyotan & Chrio Shilper Bari .[8][9][10]
