Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš (born December 13, 1964) is a Latvian politician[1] and Member of the European Parliament.

Kariņš was born in Wilmington, Delaware, United States to a Latvian American family. In 1996, he finished a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania. Soon after, he moved to Latvia, where he founded a company Lāču ledus, a producer and distributor of ice and frozen foods.

He was one of the founders of the New Era Party in 2002 and was elected to the Saeima in October of that year. Kariņš served as the chairman of the parliamentary faction of New Era from 2002 to 2004 and the Minister for Economics in the First Kalvītis cabinet from December 2004 to April 2006. In March 2007, he became one of two co-leaders of New Era (together with Einars Repše).

In July 2009 he became a MEP. He is a Member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, substitute in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and substitute in the Special Committee on Tax Rulings and Other Measures Similar in Nature or Effect. In the Parliament he is part of the European People's Party which is the biggest political grouping the parliament. He is a member of the Reconciliation of European Histories Group.[2]
