Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kinshasa
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kinshasa (Latin: Kinshasan(us)) is the Metropolitan archdiocese of the Ecclesiastical province of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Cathedral see of the archbishop is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Congo (Cathédrale Notre Dame du Congo) in national capital Kinshasa.
History
- Established on 22 November 1886 as Mission sui iuris of Belgian Congo, on territory split off from both the Apostolic Prefecture of Lower Congo (in Cubango, Angola) and the Apostolic Vicariate of Two Guineas (in Gabon)
- Promoted on 11 May 1888 as Apostolic Vicariate of Belgian Congo
- Lost territory repeatedly, to establish the Mission sui juris of Kwango on 1892.04.18, the Apostolic Prefecture of Uélé on 1898.05.12, the Mission sui juris of Kasaï Supérieur on 1901.07.26, the Apostolic Prefecture of Stanley Falls on 1904.08.03, the Apostolic Prefecture of Ubangui belge on 1911.04.07, the Apostolic Prefecture of Matadi and the Apostolic Prefecture of Northern Katanga on 1911.07.01
- 3 April On 1919, renamed Apostolic Vicariate of Léopoldville
- Lost territory again repeatedly to establish the Mission sui juris of Bikoro on 1931.01.03, the Apostolic Vicariate of Boma on 1934.02.26, the Apostolic Prefecture of Kole on 1951.06.14 and the Apostolic Vicariate of Inongo on 1953.06.29
- Promoted on 10 November 1959 as Metropolitan Archdiocese of Léopoldville, which city was about to become Congo's national capital
- Renamed on 30 May 1966 as Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kinshasa, as the capital city's name had changed
- Enjoyed papal visits from Pope John Paul II in May 1980 and August 1985.
