AnnenMayKantereit is a German rock band from Cologne, which was founded in 2011. They sing in both German and English; a notable feature is the distinctive rough voice[1] of the singer Henning May.
History
The three founding members, from whose surnames the band name was created, joined together, while at school at the Schiller-Gymnasium in Sülz in 2011.[2] At first the three of them as street musicians in Cologne, were joined at a jamming session by the Double Bass player Lars Lötgering.[3] In 2013 they released their first solo album, which had a release party in Gebäude 9 in Köln.[4] The album was also partly recorded on the street and is no longer available.[5] They have their own YouTube channel on which they have published their songs.[6] Malte Huck has been the bassist of the band since August 2014.[7]
After the release of the music video of their song Wohin du gehst, the band toured Germany. In Summer 2014 the Band played at several big festivals, such as the Appletree Garden Festival, the Open Flair and the Reeperbahn Festival. In Autumn they played at several concerts as the support act of the Beatsteaks[8] and accompanied Clueso on the Stadtrandlichter Tour as a support act.[9] They were finalists in the New Music Award of the ARD-Jugendprogramme.[10]
In December 2014 AnnenMayKantereit featured in the television programme Circus HalliGalli,[11] and in the start of 2015 they went on tour again. In Summer 2015 there were more festival performances, including at the Haldern Pop Festival and Rock am Ring. With the Hip-Hop group K.I.Z. the singer May featured in the eponymous track Hurra die Welt geht unter.
In Autumn 2015 the band signed for Universal. Together with Moses Schneider they recorded the EP Wird schon irgendwie gehen at Hansa-Studios in Berlin, which was released on the 16th of October 2015 by the label Vertigo Berlin.[12] Subsequently they had a new tour with numerous sellout venues.[5]
