Anne Mueller

Dame Anne Elisabeth Mueller, DCB (15 October 1930 – 8 July 2000) was a British civil servant and academic. She was described as "the most successful woman civil servant of her generation".

Early years

She was born in Bombay to a German businessman father and an English mother who had met and married in India. She won a scholarship to Somerville College, Oxford, where she read philosophy, politics and economics.

Career

She joined the civil service in 1953, entering the Ministry of Labour and National Service. She was later named an undersecretary at the Department of Industry (DoI) in 1972, and later a deputy secretary in 1977. She was Chancellor of De Montfort University (Leicester) from 1991 until 1995.[1]

Personal life

Her marriage to James Robertson was dissolved in 1978. She had no children.

Death

Dame Anne Mueller died in 2000, aged 69, following a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
