Andrija Popović (born 22 September 1959 Kotor, FNRJ) is a Montenegrin politician and former water polo player. He is president of the Liberal Party of Montenegro.[1]

Popović lives in Kotor. He is married to his wife Nevenka and has three children, Jelena, Andrea and Darja.

Sports career

Popovic is one of Montenegrin athletes with the highest number of medals. He was a member of the water polo team of Yugoslavia and winner of the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, the gold medal at the World Championships in 1986, and the silver medal at the European Championships in 1985 and 1987. While playing for the ”Mladost”, Zagreb he won two European Champions Cup in 1989/90 and 1990/91. He was awarded as the best athlete of Montenegro in 1985. He is Vice President of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee and president of the Montenegrin Olympians Club.[2]

Political career

He started his political career in the Liberal Alliance of Montenegro as a sport coordinator. After the split and decision of Liberal Alliance of Montenegro to freeze its work, Popovic decided to leave that political party and to join its ex members who were excluded and removed from that political party and who were gathered around the new Liberal Party of Montenegro of which he is one of the founders.

He was a member of the Parliament of Montenegro in 2008-2009. After the Liberal Party in parliamentary elections 2009th lost its parliamentary status and the old leadership of LP together with its leader Miodrag Zivkovic resigned during the extraordinary conference of the Liberal Party on June 20 2009. Andrija Popović is elected as President of Liberal Party. Since his election as the President of the Liberal Party, the party was rebuilt and restored its parliamentary status. Since October 2012. and parliamentary elections in which LP joined the European coalition with the governing DPS and SDP, Andrija Popović is again member of the Parliament of Montenegro . The Liberal Party currently freze its membership in the Coalition for European Montenegro DPS -SDP and is acting in the Parliament in the club with the minority parties (Croatian and Albanian parties).

During the IV Regular Conference of the Liberal Party of Montenegro that is held on September 14. 2013. Andrija Popovic is re-elected as President of the LP with large majority of the delegates votes.

He was a member of the Council of the European Movement for Independent Montenegro at the state and municipal level.
