American Angus Association

The American Angus Association was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1883, with 60 members, breeders of Aberdeen Angus cattle. Its original name was shortened in the 1950s from the American Aberdeen-Angus Breeders' Association. Its headquarters are now in Saint Joseph, Missouri, and includes offices for Angus Productions Inc., which publishes the Angus Journal and the Angus Beef Bulletin.

In the first century of operation more than 10 million head were recorded. The Association records more cattle each year than any other beef breed association, making it the largest beef breed registry association in the world. In fiscal year ending September 30, 2010, it registered 297,087 head for 2009-10.[1]

The American Angus Association hosts an annual show for members each year at a new destination. Along with hosting shows for the youth, the National Junior Angus Association awards many undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships to eligible members at local, state, regional and national level associated with the Angus breed. [2]

The American Angus Association set up the "Certified Angus Beef" (CAB) brand in 1978. Cattle are eligible if they meet strictly-defined criteria.[3]
