Agricultural & Applied Economics Association
The Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) is a professional association for those interested in the field of agricultural and applied economics. AAEA members work for academic departments, government agencies, NGOs, think tanks, and in the private sector, and focus on a combination of teaching, research, and cooperative extension programs. Their research covers a broad range of topics as defined by the AAEA mission.
AAEA Mission Statement
To enhance the skills, knowledge, and professional contributions of economists who help society solve agricultural, development, environmental, food and consumer, natural resource, regional, rural, and associated applied economics and business problems.[1]
AAEA Publications
AAEA is responsible for two journals, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics (AJAE),[2] and the Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy (AEPP),[3] both of which are published by Oxford University Press. The association also publishes two outreach publications, an online policy magazine called Choices,[4] as well as a more timely online publication called Policy Issues.[5] AAEA also publishes a bi-monthly newsletter called The Exchange.[6]
The History of AAEA's Name
AAEA was originally founded in 1910 as the American Farm Management Association. In 1919, it merged with the American Association of Agricultural Economists to form the American Farm Economic Association (AFEA). The Journal of Farm Economics was first published in 1919 as well.
In 1968, the AFEA changed its name to the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA), at which point its journal became the American Journal of Agricultural Economics. Finally, in 2008, AAEA changed its name to the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association, in order to more accurately describe its membership and the broadening focus of the association.[7]
