The Amazing Race 23 was the twenty-third installment of the reality television show The Amazing Race. It featured eleven teams of two people, each with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world for a US$1 million grand prize.

The season premiered on September 29, 2013, at 8 p.m. ET[Note 1]/PT on CBS, with the two-hour season finale airing on December 8, 2013.[2][3]

Dating couple Jason Case and Amy Diaz were the winners of this season of The Amazing Race.

Production

Development and filming

The season was renewed on March 27, 2013 for the 2013–14 TV season. A revised opening credits sequence and on screen clue information graphics were developed for this season with an updated map using 3D blue marble layout.[4]

The season spanned 35,000 miles (56,000 km) through four continents and nine countries, including Chile, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates.[5] The Double Express Pass, introduced in the previous season, returned – in which the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop on the first leg received two Express Passes, one for themselves and one to give to any other team.[4]

Cast

Applications for The Amazing Race 23 were closed on April 26, 2013.

The cast includes former Houston Texans players Chester Pitts and Ephraim Salaam, the wives of baseball players Chris Getz of the Kansas City Royals and David DeJesus of the Tampa Bay Rays, a pair of LA Kings Ice Crew maintenance workers, former Miss Rhode Island USA beauty queen Amy Diaz, former Minor League Baseball player and sports agent Tim Sweeney with former Lingerie Football player Marie Mazzocchi, and a pair of theater performers from the stage comedy The Queen of Bingo. Also childhood friends Brandon Squyres and Adam Switzer. Married emergency room doctors Travis and Nicole Jasper (and Travis's twin brother Travan) have also appeared on the docudrama series Untold Stories of the E.R.

Tim & Marie and Leo & Jamal were originally invited, while this season was still airing, for The Amazing Race: All-Stars. Tim & Marie turned down the invitation, but Leo & Jamal participated.

Leg 1 (United States → Chile)

In the first Roadblock of The Amazing Race 23, teams paraglided down from Alto Hospicio in Iquique, Chile.

At the Starting Line of The Amazing Race 23, which took place at the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio, teams were informed that the winner of the first leg would win the Express Pass, with the second Express Pass card to be given to another team before at the end of Leg 5. They were given for their first task: had to pick a marked Ford C-Max vehicle and use the Ford Sync system to make a phone call to their contact Javier, who told them that they were headed to Iquique, Chile, and that the first flight had a limited number of seats.

Upon arriving in Iquique, teams headed to Alto Hospicio where they met with Javier for their next clue which turned out to be their first Roadblock, asking "Who wants to follow the leader?". The team member had to take a taxi and direct their driver to follow their partner, who was tandem paragliding from Alto Hospicio down to either Playa Brava or Huayquique Beach (depending on which group of racers had arrived). Once teams reunited on the beach, the glide master would give them their next clue.

This clue told them to travel to Muelle Prat where they encountered a second Roadblock, asking "Who's got their oars in the water?". The team member who had paraglided had to participate in this Roadblock, where they had to collect five fish from one of three boats in the harbor by reaching them on a rowboat. The three fishing boats each had a limited number of fish, so if a boat ran out of fish racers would have to find one of the other boats to get the remaining fish. Once they brought the five fish back to the docks, the fishmonger would give them their next clue. This clue directed teams to travel by foot to Teatro Municipal de Iquique for the Pit Stop.

Leg 2 (Chile)

The Detours in Chile's Atacama Desert revolved around the region's salt mining industry.

Airdate: October 6, 2013[8]

At the start of the leg, teams were instructed to head to the Museo Corbeta Esmeralda, a retired boat of the Chilean navy. Once there, they had to find a plaque that included a famous quote uttered at the Battle of Iquique by Arturo Prat, the ship's last captain, and repeat it ("¡Al abordaje, muchachos!") to the officer on deck to receive their next clue. The clue from the officer directed them to head out to the Irlanda 3 road sign in the Atacama Desert and search the cluebox stand to find the next clue.

The clue was eventually discovered for a salt mining-related Detour, a choice between Brining and Mining. After biking down to the salt mines of the Tarapacá salt flats, teams chose their task. In Brining, teams had to carry bags of salt and dump them into a pool in order to reach neutral buoyancy. Once they were floating on the surface well enough to read the local newspaper, a salt miner would give teams their next clue. In Mining, the teams had to use pick axes and sledgehammers to open halite boulders until they found one that contained their next clue.

The clue directed teams to head into the capital city of Santiago to the Plaza de Armas, where they found the Roadblock, that asked "Who's got the knack to pack?". One team member had to take on the role of a lustrabota, a Chilean shoeshiner at Paseo Ahumada. After shining a customer's shoes, the racer had to put everything they got at their lustrabota station into the cart and set up back together properly for transport back to the storage depot six blocks away at Merced 738 where they would receive their next clue, directing them to the Cascada de las Animas in San José de Maipo. In an unaired portion of the race, they zip-lined across the Maipo River to reach the Pit Stop on a footbridge above the waterfalls.

Leg 3 (Chile → Portugal)

One of the Detour options in Lisbon had teams measuring the distance traveled by Ferdinand Magellan on the map at Padrão dos Descobrimentos.

Airdate: October 13, 2013[9]

At the start of the leg, teams were told to head to Lisbon, Portugal. Upon arrival, they had to find Martim Moniz Square and take a Lisbon tram up the hill to Miradouro das Portas do Sol. Once there, they had to find Fado performers that would give them their next clue: a painting of the Embassy Coach sent by King John V to Pope Clement XI. The teams were left to figure out that the clue was directing them to Museu Nacional dos Coches. At the museum, teams had to search for the Embassy Coach depicted in their painting to given their next clue.

The clue received at the museum found out was a Detour choosing between Tiles and Miles. In Tiles, teams traveled to Fábrica Sant'Ana and had to put together a life-size puzzle using porcelain tiles. Once the puzzle was complete, the tile master would give them their next clue. In Miles, teams had to first retrieve a giant-sized compass at the Jerónimos Monastery and then use it to map out the distance traveled by Ferdinand Magellan on his famed voyage on the large map at Padrão dos Descobrimentos; connecting Seville, the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde Islands, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Solis, the Strait of Magellan, Puka-Puka, San Pablo Island, the Mariana Islands, and the Philippines (the San Pablo Island and Mariana Islands markers were on the opposite side of the map, leaving teams to realize that travel between the two was a straight line restarted at the other side of the map). Once teams were within 500 nautical miles of the correct answer of 16,500 nautical miles, a Magellan impersonator would give them their next clue.

The clue following the Detour sent the teams to the Monsanto Forest Park for the Roadblock, asking "Who has the hands for slings and arrows?". Where one team member had to put on a suit of armor and then use a ballista to fire an arrow through a shield 150 feet (46 m) away. Once successful, the knight would retrieve their shield which had their next clue on the back, directing them to Sintra's Castle of the Moors for the Pit Stop.

Leg 4 (Portugal → Norway)

The Roadblock had teams jumping off of the Henningsvær Bridge, located north of the Arctic Circle in Norway, into the icy cold waters below. In the foreground are fish drying racks that were seen in both of the Detour choices.

Airdate: October 20, 2013[10]

At the start of the leg, teams were told to head to Svolvær, Norway, high above the Arctic Circle. Teams first travelled by plane to Bodø and took a ferry to Svolvær in the Lofoten archipelago. Once arriving in the island, they found their next clue at the ferry terminal.

The clue that found out was a Detour choosing between Hang Your Heads and Hammer of the Cods. In Hang Your Heads, teams had first to string fish heads in six bundles of ten fish heads each. They then had to take them by wheelbarrow to a fish drying rack and place them on a marked rod. Once finished, the fish foreman would give their next clue. In Hammer of the Cods, the teams had to collect 15 pairs of cod from a 30 feet (9.1 m) high fish drying rack and transport them to a manufacturing area (tørrfiskloft) to smash the cod into fish jerky, making sure to remove the bones. Once they had 1 kilogram (2.2 lb) of fish jerky, they would receive their next clue.

The Detour clues teams had to take an RIB to the Henningsvær fishing village's Rorbu where they found the clue for the Roadblock, asking "Who's the biggest swinger?". One team member had to put on a wetsuit and bungee jump off the Henningsvær Bridge. They then had to drop themselves into the waters of the Arctic Ocean and swim to a buoy that held their next clue, and then swim back to their partner who was waiting in the RIB.

Once the team is in RIB to taken back at ashore to return with their partner, where they instructed to take a Ford Ranger to a nearby rock quarry. They had to hitch a granite boulder onto a sled and use the Ford Ranger to pull the sled far enough to reveal both their next clue, instructing teams to head to the Lofotr Viking Museum's Viking Longhouse, and a satchel of Viking coins that they would use later in the race. The Viking Longhouse was the Pit Stop, but teams were being ordered to continue racing.

Leg 5 (Norway → Poland)

The Roadblock in Gdańsk had teams searching for apartments in the half-mile long falowiec complex in Przymorze.

Airdate: October 27, 2013[11]

Teams received their clue from the Pit Stop, informing them to travel to Gdańsk, Poland, with an informing of the upcoming U-Turn. Teams must take a ferry to Trondheim and a flight to Gdańsk. Upon arrival, teams headed to the Gdańsk Shipyard's Solidarity Square, which was the site of Solidarity movement began in the city, where they received their next clue. The clue instructed them to travel to Golden Gate and searched their next clue.

The clue eventually found out was a Detour took place in Gdańsk's Old Town and was a choice between Pose and Polka. In Pose, teams had to wear costumes and strike stationary poses to imitate the Neptune fountain at the Long Market in order to attract donations from passers-by. Once they collected 75 zł (approximately US$25), they would receive their next clue from the sculptor. In Polka, teams traveled to Old Town Hall and had to dress in traditional Polish costume before they memorized and performed a polka dance routine. Once their dance instructor was satisfied with their dancing, they would receive their next clue.

The clue teams directed them to search the Motława Riverfront for the foreman at the Medieval Harbor Crane, where they found the U-Turn stand and they must keep wearing their costumes for the remainder of the leg. Tim & Danny chose to U-Turn Leo & Jamal, while Leo & Jamal chose to U-Turn Brandon & Adam.

The clue teams received after the U-Turn sending them to the Falowiec in Przymorze where they found the clue for the Roadblock, asking "Who has a sweet tooth?". One team member had to search for 12 addresses in the half-mile (850 m) long, 6,000 person occupancy apartment complex, tasting a traditional Polish pastry known as pączki in each apartment, searching for an apartment that served a red rose hip jam-filled pączki (identified by its red center). Once they found the right ingredient inside the apartment, the resident would give them their next clue. However, teams would be penalized if they were rude guests. The clue directed teams to the Sopot Pier, the largest wooden pier in Europe, for the Pit Stop.

Leg 6 (Poland → Austria)

The gloriette of Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace was the Pit Stop for this Leg of the Race.

Airdate: November 3, 2013[12]

At the start of the Leg, teams were told to travel by train to Vienna, Austria. Upon arriving in Vienna, they had to head to the Vienna State Opera where they had to search for someone dressed as Rigoletto who would take them to the costume department for their next clue. The clues had eventually found out was a Fast Forward. The team to head to the Donauturm, Vienna's tallest structure, to perform a 500-foot (150 m) bungee jump back down to the ground.

Other teams did not choose the Fast Forward and opened their Detour clue, given the teams choose between Light Brigade and Masquerade. In Light Brigade, teams traveled to Ephesos Museum and dressed up as court servants and put together an elaborate crystal chandelier. If it was put together properly, the chamberlain would give them their next clue. However, if they were incorrect on their first try, the chamberlain would destroy the chandelier, forcing them to start over. In Masquerade, teams headed to Palais Lobkowitz and put on elaborately colored masks and joined a Viennese ball. They had to search amongst the dancers for the two who wore masks identical to their own, but teams had to pay attention, as the masks only differed in minute detail. Once they found the right dancers, the hostess would give them their next clue.

The clue teams received from the Detour where they headed to Palais Augarten, the home of Vienna Boys' Choir and they picked up the next clue, which was for the Roadblock, asking them "Who's a choir boy at heart?". One team member joined the choir and had to learn how to sing Franz Schubert's "Die Forelle". When the choir master was satisfied with the teams' German pronunciation and musicality, he would award them their next clue, sending them to Schönbrunn Palace. After searching the palace's hedge maze for their clue, they were instructed to head to the palace's Gloriette for the Pit Stop.

Leg 7 (Austria → United Arab Emirates)

Upon arriving in Abu Dhabi, teams visited the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world.

Airdate: November 10, 2013[13]

During the rest period at the Pit Stop, teams were moved to Vienna's Stadtpark where they were given their next clue, instructing them to fly to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Upon arrival in Abu Dhabi, teams travelled to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque where (after the women put on abayas) they would receive their next clue.

The clue received at the mosque where sending the teams to the Irani Souk to search for their clue for the Detour: a choice between Sort it Out or Sew it Up. In Sort it Out, teams traveled to Al Mina Vegetable Market and had to search through several types of dates to prepare an elaborate display tray. Once it was correct, they would receive their next clue. In Sew it Up, teams headed to the Dhow Harbour and had to put together a traditional fishing net. Once the fishing boat captain was pleased with their work, they would receive their next clue.

The clues after the Detour instructed teams to take a boat over to Yas Island, where in the marina they found their next clue for the Roadblock that asked "Who wants to drop in on a hot lap?". One team member had to take a 200-foot (61 m) drop from the top of the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel, rappeling down to ground. They then got into a Le Mans Prototype racecar and rode along on a lap of the Yas Marina Circuit. While in the car, racers had to look amongst signs on the track with drivers' names and lap times logged in the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for the circuit record of 1:40.279 set by Sebastian Vettel. Once they told the pit crew chief the correct time and driver, he would give them their next clue. If incorrect, they would have to make another lap around the track. Racers would continue to make laps around the track until they got the correct name and time. The clue sent teams to the circuit's champion's podium for the Pit Stop.

Leg 8 (United Arab Emirates)

Jebel Hafeet was the location of the Pit Stop on this Leg of the Race.

Airdate: November 17, 2013[14]

At the start of the leg, teams were told to find marked Ford Explorers in the Yas Marina Circuit's pit row garage and use the Viking coins from the Norway leg to decipher a numeric code to unlock their Ford Explorer's doors. Teams then drove themselves to the Bou Thib Endurance Village in the Al Khatim Desert where they had to get out and use dune buggies to follow a marked course until they found a cluebox containing their next clue, directing them to the Al Ain Oasis. After parking their Ford Explorers at the Al Ain National Museum, they could continue onto the oasis where they had to search for their clue amongst several date palm trees. Teams then had to ask help from local tree climbers to get their next clue.

The clue had turned out was for the Detour at Al Ain's Al Jahili Fort, with a warn of an upcoming U-Turn, and the choice was Wedding Guests or Beauty Contest. In Wedding Guests, teams had to prepare machbūs, a traditional Emirati dish for wedding guests. After gathering and cutting up all of the necessary ingredients, they put it into a large pot and then served a finished dish to a wedding party who would give them their next clue. In Beauty Contest, teams had find a camel that met a set of breed guidelines, and then dress it up for an upcoming camel show. If the judges were pleased with their camel selection, they would award the teams their next clue.

The clue sent teams to the Al Jahili Fort's tower where they found the U-Turn stand. Nicole & Travis chose to U-Turn Leo & Jamal, while Tim & Marie chose to U-Turn Nicky & Kim, who were falling behind. The clue teams received after the U-Turn and sending them to the Wadi Adventure park.

For the Speed Bump, Nicky & Kim had to quickly swim their way across a generated wave pool, with a wave 6 feet high crashing down upon them once every 90 seconds. Once they made it up the ladder on the other side of the pool without being pushed off, they could continue racing and move onto the Roadblock. For the Roadblock and teams asked "Who likes rapid transit?", one team member had to ride down the largest man-made river rapids in the world and collect three flags each colored red, green, and black. Once they had all three flags, they were given their next clue, sending them to the Mercure Grand Hotel on top of Jebel Hafeet for the Pit Stop.

Leg 9 (United Arab Emirates → Indonesia)

The Roadblock in Bandung had teams putting together an angklung, a traditional Indonesian musical instrument.

Airdate: November 24, 2013[15]

During the break at the Pit Stop, all teams were moved to Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel to start the leg, where they were told to next head to Bandung, Indonesia. Upon arrival, they headed to the village of Cileunyi and to the Cikapandang ram arena to participate in a traditional West Javanese ram fight. After picking up two Priangan rams from a marked Kei truck, teams brought the rams to the arena. Once the two rams butted heads, they had to return the rams back to the trucks in order to receive their next clue.

The clues received where teams informed them to head back to Bandung by train for the Detour, giving them to choice between For the Elephants and For the Birds. In For the Elephants, teams visited Simpang Dago Market where they had to pick up eight watermelons, two bunches of bananas, one dozen sweet potatoes, and five strokes of sugar cane before heading to Bandung Zoo. Once there, they transported the food on one of the provided hand trolleys to the elephant enclosure where they fed the elephants and received their next clue. In For the Birds, teams picked up two matching peach-faced lovebirds from Kios Pak Dedi at Sukahaji Market and then took them to a bird song competition at the Sumber Sari Arena. After entering the birds into the competition, teams would have to get their birds to sing and scored by a judge who would award them their next clue.

This clue following the Detour sent teams to the town of Padasuka for the Roadblock, asking them "Who has an inkling for an Angklung?". One team member had to properly assemble an angklung, a traditional Indonesian musical instrument made of tubes of bamboo. Once they had assembled the stand correctly and could play a complete octave, one of the students would give them their next clue, sending them to the Bosscha Observatory in Lembang for the Pit Stop.

Leg 10 (Indonesia)

This Leg's Roadblock had teams cooking hardboiled eggs in the hot springs of the Tangkuban Perahu volcano.

Airdate: December 1, 2013[16]

At the start of the leg, teams were told to travel to the town of Parongpong and find the Ciwangun Indah Camp's King Cobra House. Once there, they were told they had to eat a 20-centimetre (7.9 in) portion of grilled king cobra meat in order to receive their next clue.

The clue were eventually directed them to Tangkuban Perahu volcano for the Roadblock and they asked "Who's feeling Hard Boiled?". One team member picked up 60 eggs from a foodstand and then took an 8-minute moped taxi ride into the Kawah Domas crater of Tangkuban Perahu to use one of the volcanic hot springs to boil the eggs. After returning to the stand with the cooked eggs, the egg man would slice each of them open to see if they were hard-boiled. Once they had a dozen hard-boiled eggs, teams would receive their next clue.

The clue instructed teams to travel to the Kawah Ratu crater in an unaired segment to pick up their clue for the Detour: a choice between Paint Your Partner and Turn Over a New Leaf. In Paint Your Partner, teams went to the Gracia Spa Graha Ciater where they had to make each other up in traditional Javanese bridal makeup without a mirror. Once the beautician was satisfied with their work, he would give them their next clue. In Turn Over a New Leaf, teams traveled to a tea plantation in Ciater and dressed in the traditional uniform of the tea harvesters. They then had to search the tea plantation for a pair of clipping shears hidden in the tea plants which they could trade to the local tea plantation worker for their next clue. The clues sent teams to the town of Cisarua and the Curug Cimahi waterfall for the Pit Stop.

Leg 11 (Indonesia → Japan)

Upon arriving in Tokyo, teams traveled to the Gotokuji Temple, known for its extensive collection of maneki-neko statues.

Airdate: December 8, 2013[3]

During the Pit Stop, all teams were moved to the Sheraton Bandung to start the leg, where they were told their next destination was Tokyo, Japan. Upon arrival, teams had to make their way to the Gotokuji Temple in Setagaya, known for its extensive collection of maneki-neko statues, where they searched their next clue amongst with these statues.

The clue had found out that was a Detour, giving them the choice of Knock It Down or Call It Up. In Knock It Down, teams had to pick up four pins from outside the Tokyo Media City studios and then participate in a Human Bowling game show, alternating sliding down on an inner tube into a set of pins. Once they got a strike, the game show host would give them their next clue. In Call It Up, teams participated in an art installation in Kinuta Park using Tokyo's obsolete phone booths filled with water and goldfish. One racer had to put on a swimsuit and goldfish-shaped swimming cap and then jump into the booth, dial a provided telephone number, and then listen to the provided message: "Welcome to Tokyo. Wasabi taberu." They then had to tell the message to their partner who had to run over to a judge to relay the message back to them. If they were correct, they received their next clue.

The clues after the Detour sent teams to Shinjuku Central Park where they had the Speed Bump and the Roadblock. For their Speed Bump, Leo and Jamal had to join a group of zookeepers in an escaped rhinoceros drill. Once the "rhino" was captured, they would be permitted to continue onto the Roadblock with the other teams. In the Roadblock, the teams asked "Who needs to Pipe Up or go home?", one racer had to put together a "robot" using a set of cardboard pipes, with only a miniature model as a guide. Once the engineer was pleased with their build job, they received their next clue.

The Roadblock clue where teams received directed them to Shibuya and had to search the Shibuya scramble crossing for a roaming "vending machine" that held their next clue, directing them to Shibuya's Konnō Hachimangū Shrine for the Pit Stop.

Leg 12 (Japan → United States)

In the Juneau Icefield, teams traversed the Norris Glacier (pictured with the Taku Glacier) for their next clue.

During the Pit Stop, all teams were moved to Shinjuku Central Park to start the leg, where they were given their final destination city: Juneau, Alaska. Upon arriving in Juneau, teams took a boat from Douglas Island to Mendenhall Valley where they took part in the Roadblock, and asked "Who needs to increase their Flour Power?". One team member rode in a bush plane flying at 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) at least 150 feet (46 m) above the ground in a supply drop exercise, dropping a bag of flour onto a target on the ground. Once they hit the target, they received their next clue.

The clue after the Roadblock where teams sending them to the Norris Glacier in the Juneau Icefield. Upon arrival at the glacier, teams picked a mountain guide to help them reach the face of the glacier, crossing a crevasse and going through an ice tunnel along the way. They then had to search the glacier for their next clue frozen inside the glacier and then dig it out with a pickaxe. However, there were several false clues instructing teams to search the glacier for the real next clue that instructed them to kayak out to a marked island that held their next clue. After finding their clue on the island, teams took a helicopter to downtown Juneau.

The teams then arrived in downtown Juneau, and then headed out to the Blueberry Hills Trailhead where they found their final task. Teams had to put together a wall of totem poles that spelled out the names of the currencies used in the countries they visited in the proper order:

Once they had the right order, they were given their final clue, instructing them to drive to the end of the North Douglas Highway and then down the Outer Point Trail to the Finish Line.

Canadian broadcaster CTV also airs The Amazing Race on Sundays. Episodes air at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, Central and Pacific (9:00 p.m. Mountain and Atlantic) with one exception: Episode nine aired two hours earlier than its normal start time due to CTV's broadcast of the 2013 American Music Awards.
