Alison Brie Schermerhorn (born December 29, 1982),^[1] known professionally as Alison Brie,^[2] is an American actress. She is known for portraying Annie Edison on the NBC/Yahoo! series Community, Trudy Campbell on the AMC drama Mad Men, and the voice of Diane Nguyen on the Netflix animated series, BoJack Horseman. She has starred in films such as Scream 4 (2011), The Five-Year Engagement (2012), The Lego Movie (2014), Get Hard (2015) and Sleeping with Other People (2015).

Early life

Brie was born in Hollywood, California. Her mother, Joanne (née Brenner), works at Para los Niños ("For the Children"), a non-profit child care agency,^[3] and her father, (Charles) Terry Schermerhorn^[4] (a.k.a. Terry Charles), is a musician and freelance entertainment reporter.^[5][4] She has a sister, Lauren.^[4][5]

Brie's mother is Jewish^[6] and her father has Dutch, Scottish, and Irish ancestry. Brie has stated that, while being raised by her divorced parents, she occasionally attended a "Christian-Hindu hybrid church", the Self-Realization Fellowship, with her father. However, her mother "would always make sure we knew we were Jewish".^[7][8][6]

Brie began acting onstage at the Jewish Community Center in Southern California.^[9][5] She graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a bachelor's in theater in 2005.^[10] For a time, she studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland.^[11][5]

Career

Prior to becoming a movie actress, Brie worked as a clown at birthday parties and performed in theater in California.^[12]

One of her first television roles was Nina, a novice hairdresser, on Hannah Montana. She went on to star in the web series My Alibi and was chosen for the role of Trudy Campbell in Mad Men. From 2009 to 2015, she portrayed Annie Edison on the NBC (and later Yahoo! Screen) sitcom Community.

In April 2010, she co-hosted an episode of Attack of the Show!,^[13] and appeared in a short segment on Web Soup.^[14] She appeared in the 2010 film Montana Amazon.^[15] She made Maxim magazine's 2010 Hot 100 list at number 99,^[16] and appeared at number 49 in their 2011 list.^[17] She was voted the 56th sexiest woman in the world by FHM readers in 2013.^[18] She was also voted the 2nd most desirable woman in the world by Askmen readers in 2014.^[19]

Brie has had several major film roles. She starred as Sidney Prescott's assistant in the 2011 horror film Scream 4,^[20] and appeared in the 2012 comedy film The Five-Year Engagement. She voiced Unikitty in The Lego Movie (2014), and voiced a character in an episode of the long-running adult animation series American Dad!, which aired during their 10th season.^[21][22] In 2015, she starred alongside Jason Sudekis in Leslye Headland's romantic comedy film Sleeping with Other People, and played Will Ferrell's character's fiancée in Get Hard.^[23]

In June 2014, Brie joined the cast of the Netflix series BoJack Horseman, which debuted on August 22, and over the first two seasons she has voiced a variety of characters, including main character Diane Nguyen and recurring character Vincent Adultman.^[24][25]

Personal life

Brie has been dating actor Dave Franco since 2012.^[26] On August 25, 2015, it was reported the two were engaged.^[27][26] Brie is a best friend of actresses Julianna Guill and Cyrina Fiallo and performs in a band with them called "The Girls".
