Alexis Márquez Rivas (born March 25, 1989) is a Venezuelan swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events.[1] He currently holds a short course Venezuelan record of 1:59.77 in the 200 m butterfly at the 2011 Copa de España Clubes Segunda Division in Castellón de la Plana, Spain.[2]
Marquez qualified for the men's 200 m butterfly at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, by clearing a FINA B-standard entry time of 2:00.89 from the Latin Cup in Serravalle, San Marino.[3][4] He challenged seven other swimmers on the second heat, including Olympic veterans Vladan Marković of Serbia, James Walsh of the Philippines, and Donny Utomo of Indonesia. Marquez cruised to fifth place by a quarter of a second (0.25) behind South Korea's Yoo Jung-Nam in 2:01.25. Marquez failed to advance into the semifinals, as he placed thirty-sixth overall in the preliminary heats.[5]
