Career highlights

Alex Johnson (born 2 March 1992) is an Australian professional Australian rules football and premiership player for the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). He made his first appearance at the senior level in the 2011 AFL season.[1] Johnson made his debut in Round 3, against West Coast.[2] He was educated at Xavier College in Victoria.

Having put on plenty of weight in muscle before the 2011 season, Johnson was able to not only break into the senior side but maintain his position for the entire year. Playing as the 3rd tall defender in the side, Johnson performed his role wonderfully well and exceeded all expectations of him set by the coaching staff. His strong play filled the gaping hole left by a retiring champion Craig Bolton early in the year. His poise and strong one on one contesting were the standout features of his game throughout 2011 and he also improved his rebound and attacking play as the season wore on.

Season 2012

Johnson was a key player in the Sydney Swans' AFL Premiership-winning side, playing every game in the regular season and the finals series. His ability to play as a key defender and professional approach to the game saw him awarded with the 2012 Swans Rising Star Award.[3]

Knee Troubles

In Sydney's 2013 NAB Cup match against the Gold Coast Suns, Johnson tore his anterior cruciate ligament, requiring a full knee reconstruction. He opted for the traditional reconstruction in April of that year. In July 2013, an arthroscope revealed that the ligament had not re-attached as doctors had hoped, and he would require another reconstruction. This time he opted for LARS surgery, identical to the procedure undertaken by Premiership teammate Nick Malceski.

Johnson was able to recover from this and rehabilitate his knee in time to play in the Swans' reserves team round one fixture against Greater Western Sydney at Blacktown. He played ten minutes, taking intercept marks and having a few running bounces in his return to football, but landed awkwardly in seemingly innocuous three man contest and hobbled from the ground. It was later revealed by coach John Longmire that he would require another reconstruction, and it is unknown which option he will take.
