Alan D. Schnitzer
Alan D. Schnitzer (born 1965) is the Chief Executive Officer of Travelers, and serves on the company's Board of Directors.[1] He was previously Vice Chairman of The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRV), a leading provider of property casualty insurance for auto, home and business, and Chief Executive Officer of the company's Business and International Insurance segment. [2] [3] Schnitzer oversaw Travelers’ Field Management, Corporate Communications and Public Policy organizations. [4]
Education
Schnitzer received his Bachelor's degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, graduating magna cum laude. He earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.[5]
Career
Schnitzer was named Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Business and International Insurance for Travelers in July 2014. He also oversaw Field Management, Corporate Communications and Public Policy.[4] Previously, he headed the company’s Financial, Professional and International Insurance segment.[6] Schnitzer was instrumental in repositioning the company’s international business, including Travelers’ expanded presence in South America and Canada.[7] In 2013, under Schnitzer's leadership, Travelers’ International Insurance acquired The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company from E-L Financial Corporation Limited (TSX: ELF).[8] In 2015, Travelers’ joint venture with J. Malucelli acquired a majority interest in Cardinal Compañía de Seguros, a Colombian start-up surety provider.[9][10]
Schnitzer first joined Travelers in 2007 as Vice Chairman and Chief Legal Officer and has served on the company’s Management and Operating Committees since that time.[11] In that role he oversaw the company’s legal, public policy and government affairs functions.
Prior to joining Travelers, Schnitzer was a partner at the law firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, where he advised corporate clients on a variety of transactions and general corporate law matters. While at Simpson Thacher, Schnitzer served as Travelers’ lead outside counsel.[12]
Advisory positions
Schnitzer is on the Advisory Board for the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Urban Research,[13] and he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.[14] He served on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor Advisory Committee created under the Dodd-Frank Act.[15] He is also a member of The Business Council.[16]
Philanthropy
Schnitzer is on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Council for Education Reform (CCER).[17] He is a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Business Committee[18] Schnitzer also serves on the board of directors of the New York City Ballet.[19]
Awards
Schnitzer received the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Business Committee Civic Leadership Award in the spring of 2015.[20]
