A juzʼ (Arabic: جزء, plural اجزاء ajzāʼ, literally meaning "part") is one of thirty parts of equal length into which the Quran is sometimes divided. Of note, division into juz has no relevance to the meaning of the Quran and anyone can start reading from anywhere in the Quran.[1] During medieval times, when it was too costly for most Muslims to purchase a manuscript, copies of the Quran were held in mosques in order to make them accessible to people; these copies frequently took the form of a series of thirty parts ('juz').[2] Some use these divisions to facilitate recitation of the Quran in a month – especially during Ramadan, when the entire Quran is recited in the Tarawih prayers, reciting approximately one juz a night. A juz is further divided into two ahzab (groups), and each hizb (group) is in turn subdivided into four quarters, making eight quarters per juz, called maqra. There are 240 of these quarters (of hizb) in the Quran. These maqra are often used as sections for revision when memorizing the Quran. The most commonly memorized juz is juzʾ amma, which is the 30th juz and contains chapters (sura) 78 through 114, most of the shortest chapters of the Quran. Juzʾ amma is named after the 1st word of the 1st chapter (chapter 78) in that juz. Muslims from South Asia also refer to a juz as a para or paaro.[3]
