Adriaen Frans Boudewyns
Adriaan Frans Boudewyns, not Anton Frans (Bauduins, or Baudouin), (3 October 1644 – 3 December 1719) was a Flemish Baroque landscape painter.
Biography
He was born in Brussels and learned to paint under a landscape painter named Ignatius van der Stock, and was received into the Guild there in 1665. He then travelled to Paris in 1666 and studied under A. F. van der Meulen for three years, and whose daughter Barbara he married 12 January 1670.[1] In 1674 his wife died and in 1681 he moved back to Brussels where he married again.[1] According to Houbraken he was a good landscape painter who encourage Gerard Hoet to stay in Brussels for 8 months in the 1680s.[2] His son Frans Boudewijns (1682-1767) also became a successful painter.[1] He was ruined in the bombardment of Brussels in 1695.[1]
Works
He painted landscapes in an Italian manner, which were decorated with figures by others, most notably Pieter Bout and Charles Emmanuel Biset.[1] The Dresden Gallery has ten of their joint productions, the Madrid Gallery nine, the Uffizi in Florence three, the Louvre one, and the Vienna Gallery has two, and they are also seen in the Galleries of Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Brunswick. The date of Boudewyns' death is not known for certain. Besides painting, Boudewyns devoted much of his time to engraving. His plates are chiefly after the pictures or designs of Van der Meulen, and are etched in a bold, free style, producing a good effect. His works are as follow:
- Six Landscapes, with Figures ; middle-sized plates.
- Six large Landscapes ; dedicated to Ph. de Champagne.
- Eight Landscapes, with Buildings.
- Two Stag-hunts ; one dedicated to the Marquis de Louvois.
- A large Landscape, with the March of the King to Vincennes; dedicated to Charles Le Brun.
- A large Landscape, with the Queen going to Versailles; dedicated to the Duc de Noailles.
- Six Views of Towns in France.
- Two Views of Versailles; as it was, and as it is.
- View of the Castle of Vincennes.
- View of the Palace of Fontainebleau; two sheets.
- Two Views of Gardens in Italy ; after A. Genoels.
