Adnan Shihab-Eldin
Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin has been Acting for the Secretary General for OPEC (2005). While in this post he was awarded the Medal of the President of the Italian Republic. He joined OPEC as director of the Research Division in August 2001 and is now retired from the Organization. He now holds the post as general director of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).

He was the first Director General of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR).
From March 1999 to August 2001 he served as director of the Division for Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, the Department of Technical Co-operation, at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. Prior to joining the IAEA, he served as director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Technology and as the UNESCO Representative in Egypt, Sudan and Yemen.
Background
A Kuwaiti citizen, Dr. Shihab-Eldin received a B.Sc. in electrical engineering in 1965, an M.Sc. in 1967 and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering in 1970, all from the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught and directed research in the physical and engineering sciences, as well as the applied fields of energy technology and the environment, at a number of universities and research centres in Kuwait, the United States and Europe. In Kuwait, he worked as planning engineer with Kuwait National Petroleum Company from 1965 to 1970.

Dr. Shihab-Eldin is a member of many national, regional and international professional societies; he has also served as a member of the board of directors of more than 30 companies and foundations and on numerous advisory committees. He has published more than 150 scientific papers, articles and reports, and co-authored five books, as well as having delivered numerous lectures and invited talks at international and regional meetings.
