The Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology (AAST) or The Academy is a branch school of the Horry County Schools system in Horry County, South Carolina, USA. It has a focus on specialized majors and has qualifying status as a Blue Ribbon School and as a New American High School.
Description
The Academy is located in an incorporated section of the Carolina Forest neighborhood just off International Drive and Hwy 31, in Myrtle Beach, SC. The school building opened in December 2007 following the closure of the old Academy building located off Highway 17. The Academy houses two programs: a majors-based program for junior and senior students, and a four-year STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) program. Students enter AAST through an application process. The STEM application process includes an application and a proctored writing sample.
History
The Academy began as a career and technology school, preparing students for careers following high school. In 1996, the school began offering more opportunities for students who plan to attend a two- or four-year university. These options have grown to include Advanced Placement classes, dual-credit classes in conjunction with Horry-Georgetown Technical College, and college-preparatory classes.
