Abington Academy was a middle school located in Wigston, Leicestershire, England. It opened in September 1957 as Abington High School.[1]

History

The history of the school is traceable to 1934, moving to its last site in 1954 and officially opening in September 1957.[2]

On 1 April 2012, Abington High School converted to an academy, becoming Abington Academy. In 2015, plans for the merger with Bushloe High School were finalized.

In 2007, 50 years after opening, Abington got a new Sports Hall.

In 2012, a new centre for children with Autism was opened called EXCEL. Children in EXCEL will remain in EXCEL from Year 6 to Year 13,

Merger

A merger with neighbouring school Bushloe High School was proposed towards the end of 2013. After several consultation periods, it was announced in Spring 2015 that Bushloe and Abington would merge in September 2015 to form Wigston Academy under the new trust, Wigston Academy Trust. In September 2017, the age range of the school will change from 10 - 14 to 11 - 16.

On Tuesday 1st September 2015, Abington Academy merged with Bushloe High School to become Wigston Academy under the Wigston Academies Trust.
