Differences from the book

The film contains a scene in the second act that resembles the plot of the book, while the rest of the story is a complete departure from the book. Lewis and Wilbur's distinctive hairstyles are true to the book, as well as the general physical characteristics of the other Robinson characters. The exception is Mr. Robinson, because in the movie, he is the future version of Lewis and doesn't appear until later, whereas in the book he is seen as having dark hair and appears much earlier. In film Wilbur's relationship to Lewis is revealed to go beyond that of being his best friend. Since the film jumps ahead about twenty years from the science fair scene and on, Lewis turns out to be Wilbur's father.

In the film, the elementary school Lewis attends is named as a tribute to the author, William Joyce. It is switched around to Joyce Williams Elementary School.
