A.P. Indy (foaled March 31, 1989) is a champion stallion Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his wins in the Belmont Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic in 1992. As of 2016, he was the oldest living winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Background
A.P. Indy is a bay horse bred in Kentucky, USA, by William Farish III and William Kilroy. He was sired by Triple Crown-winner Seattle Slew out of mare Weekend Surprise, which was sired by another Triple Crown winner, Secretariat. He was the top-priced yearling of 1990 at $2.9 million.
At maturity, he reached 16 hands (64 inches, 163 cm) high.[1]
Racing career
Trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale, A.P. Indy raced in 1991 and 1992. As a two-year-old, he won the Grade I Hollywood Futurity. At three, he took the Grade I Breeders' Cup Classic, the Belmont Stakes, the Grade I Santa Anita Derby, the Grade II San Rafael Stakes, and the Grade II Peter Pan Stakes, and finished third in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. In 1992, he was voted the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year and the Eclipse Award Champion three-year-old. In his career, he made 11 starts, winning eight and showing once, earning a total of $2,979,815. He was entered in the 1992 Kentucky Derby, but was scratched the morning of the race.
A.P. Indy was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2000.
Stud record
Since being retired to stud, he has sired hundreds of winning Thoroughbreds. Through 2011, he sired 140 stakes winners. In 2005 alone, he sired 16 stakes winners. Among his progeny are Sweet Symphony, Suave, 2003 U.S. Horse of the Year Mineshaft, Golden Missile, Aptitude, Delta Princess, and Dreaming of Julia. In 2006, he sired Preakness Stakes winner and Three-Year-Old Champion Bernardini. He is also the sire of history-making 2007 Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches, the first filly to win that race in over a century. In 2009, his son Eye of the Leopard won Canada's most prestigious race, the Queen's Plate.
A.P. Indy is also well-established as a sire of sires. Among his sons and grandsons are successful and popular sires Mineshaft, Pulpit, Malibu Moon, Bernardini, Congrats, Flatter, Sky Mesa, Jump Start, Majestic Warrior, and Tapit. As a broodmare sire, mares A.P. Indy has sired have produced 14 more stakes winners.
He stood at stud at Lane's End Farm, where stud fee at its peak was $300,000.[2] He commanded $150,000 for a single live cover breeding, stands and nurses, in 2010. A.P. Indy sired his last foals in 2010, when only 36 of 80 mares he bred conceived.[2] He was retired from stud duty on April 8, 2011, upon failing to produce a confirmed live foal in the 25 mares he covered.
