Development

In August 2009, director Vikram Kumar announced that he was set to direct a film titled 24. The film was backed by film producer Mohan Natarajan which would feature actor Vikram in a lead role. Harris Jayaraj was confirmed to score the music and P. C. Sreeram to handle the film cinematography.[5] By late 2009, the filming commenced at AVM Studios, Chennai.[6] Expensive sets that resembled dense forests and caves were replicated.[6] In an interview with The Times of India in Chennai, director Vikram stated, "We have signed Ileana D'Cruz to do 24. It will be her re-launch in Tamil cinema. She has given us bulk dates from February 2010 for the second schedule of the film."[7][8] In February 2010, Vikram Kumar officially announced that he had dropped the film. Vikram clarified that he fine-tuned the film script but it was rejected by actor Vikram and the film producer.[9] Further, the other reason cited was that the director had failed to provide the complete script even while production expenses were increasing.[10] Due to difference of opinions, the director voluntarily walked out and stated that he had been making in the script and will approach a leading actor in future.[9] Vikram Kumar later approached Mahesh Babu with the script, who also was uninterested with the offer.[11]

In August 2014, Suriya's production company 2D Entertainment announced the project through their official Twitter handle. In October 2014, A. R. Rahman was announced as the film soundtrack and score composer. Actor Suriya was confirmed as the male lead with direction by Vikram Kumar.[12] The main plot of the revived project was the same that was narrated to actor Vikram but over the years, Vikram Kumar changed of the screenplay with changes in narration.[13]Actor Suriya has played triple[10] roles in the film–an elder brother, younger brother and as the son of the elder brother.[11]The producers had potential discussions with Catherine Tresa[14] for the lead female role before Samantha was finalised in February 2015.[15] In July 2015, Nithya Menen was roped in to essay an important role.[16]

Principal photography commenced in Mumbai on April 8, 2015.[17] A romantic song was filmed in Nashik by early-June 2015.[18] Certain scenes were filmed at Filmistaan studios in Goregaon.[10] Certain VFX works were also carried out in the same studio by September 2015.[10] Nithya Menen began filming her portions in the city from August 1, 2015.[19] The first schedule was completed by early September 2015.[20] By mid of the same month a twenty-day schedule began in Poland, where two songs and some important scenes were filmed.[20]This second schedule of filming was wrapped up on September 30, 2015.[21]On October 26, 2015, the team shot an important sequences in Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune. The lyricists contributing to the soundtrack are Madhan Karky and Vairamuthu.[24] Recording of one of the tracks written by Vairamuthu was completed by February 2015.[15] Madhan Karky confirmed his association in September 2015.[25] He has penned three songs for the soundtrack.[25] In an interview with The Hindu, Suriya told that recording of one more track was completed by September 2015.[10]

Release

Legal issues

A controversy broke out pertaining to the title 24. Actor Anil Kapoor did not appreciate this move of the production house as the official look and logo of the film title seemed similar to the American TV series 24, for which Kapoor had bought the remake rights for from 20th Century Fox International TV.[26] Kapoor held the rights of the 192 episodes for a period of four years extendable to another ten years. His lawyers defended the case, stating that Kapoor holds one of the highest licensee deals for a fiction format.[26] A legal action was planned against Suriya and his production house 2D Entertainment.
