The 2016 AFF Championship (marketed as the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup due to the company's sponsorship) will be the eleventh edition of the AFF Championship, the football championship of nations affiliated to the ASEAN Football Federation. The group stages of the Championships (Semi-finals onwards can be held in any of the nations that advance) by Myanmar and the Philippines.[1] The whole tournament will run from 19 November – 17 December 2016.[2]

Hosts

At the 11th ASEAN Football Federation Council meeting in Naypyidaw on 21 December 2013, Myanmar and the Philippines were named as co-hosts of the tournament. This will mark the first time that both nations will host the regional tournament.[3]

Venues

The Philippine Football Federation is having talks with the Negros Occidental Football Association regarding the possibility of hosting matches at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod. Iloilo City is also being eyed as the second host venue for the games. The ASEAN Football Federation has also inspected the Philippine Sports Stadium to assess it capability to host matches of the AFF Championship.[4] The Philippine Sports Stadium is being considered as the primary Philippine venue with the Rizal Memorial Stadium as the secondary venue.[5]

Qualification

Also during the AFF Council Meeting in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, Cambodia were named as hosts for the qualification tournament.[6] The top seven teams at the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup including the qualifiers, automatically qualifies for the final round. Myanmar and the Philippines automatically qualifies to the final round as hosts.[7]

Note: Indonesia is suspended by FIFA and they won't be able to participate in the tournament if suspension imposed on them won't be lifted in time for the tournament.

Tie-breaking criteria

Ranking in each group shall be determine as follows:

  1. Greater number of points obtained in all the group matches;
  2. Goal difference in all the group matches;
  3. Greater number of goals scored in all the group matches.

If two or more teams are equal on the basis on the above three criteria, the place shall be determined as follows:

  1. Result of the direct match between the teams concerned;
  2. Kicks from the penalty mark if the teams concerned are still on the field of play;
  3. Drawing lots by the Organising Committee.
