The 2014 Singapore Grand Prix (formally known as the 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix)[1] was a Formula One motor race held on 21 September 2014 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Marina Bay, Singapore.[3] The race was the fourteenth round of the 2014 season. It was the seventh consecutive time the race had been run as a round of the Formula One World Championship. The race was won by Lewis Hamilton starting from pole.

Report

Background

As in the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix, tyre supplier Pirelli brought its yellow-banded soft compound tyre as the harder "prime" tyre and the red-banded supersoft compound tyre as the softer "option" tyre, as opposed to the previous year where medium and super-soft selection were provided.[4] The drag reduction system (DRS) had two activation zones for the race; one was from turns 5 and 7, and the second was on the start/finish straight from the final to first corners.[5]

Going into the race, Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg led the Drivers' Championship with 238 points, ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton with 216 points and Daniel Ricciardo with 166. Valtteri Bottas was fourth with 122 points while Fernando Alonso was fifth with 121 points.[5] In the Constructors' Championship, Mercedes were leading with 454 points and Red Bull were second with 272 points. Williams with 177 points and Ferrari with 162 points contended for third place, with McLaren fifth with 110 points.[5] Mercedes had so far dominated the championship, winning eleven out of the fourteen races so far in the calender.

In the weeks before the race, the FIA announced plans to introduce a ban on certain pit-to-car communications, with a particular emphasis on banning driver "coaching"such as describing a driver's sector times relative to another competitorunder Article 20.1 of the sporting regulations, which state that a driver must drive the car "alone and unaided".[6]

Qualifying

The qualifying began at 21:00 local time (UTC+8). Hamilton took his sixth pole position of the season, and his third overall in Singapore. He beat Nico Rosberg by seven thousands of a second with a time of 1:45.681.[7]

Race

The race started at 20:00 local time (UTC+8). The conditions on the grid were dry before the race. Rosberg's car had faults at the start of the formation lap due to wiring loom in his car that forced him to start from the pit lane, He ultimately retired after thirteen laps.[8]

The power unit on Kamui Kobayashi's car failed during the formation lap and he failed to make it to the starting grid.[9]
