The 2011–12 season was Cardiff City's 85th in the Football League after joining in 1920. Cardiff were in their eighth consecutive season in the second tier of English football. They failed to gain promotion the previous year after being knocked out of the play-off semi-finals by Reading. During the season, Cardiff reached the Football League Cup final, however their first final in the competition ended in defeat against Liverpool.
