Dynamo Dresden started the 2007–2008 season with two aims: to win promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, or failing that to at least finish in the top 10 to qualify for the 3rd Liga, which was to begin in 2008. They made a number of major signings, including the return of Lars Jungnickel, Marek Penksa and Maik Wagefeld, and in September coach Norbert Meier was replaced with Eduard Geyer, another familiar face. They achieved their secondary aim, finishing in 8th place.

At the beginning of the season, Dynamo Dresden changed their name, dropping the 1. FC and reverting to the traditional SG Dynamo Dresden.
