The Italian association football club S.S. Lazio had three points deducted as punishment for their involvement in the Calciopoli scandal. In addition, they were not allowed to participate in the UEFA Cup. Surprisingly, they managed to overcome this deficit finishing the season in third place ahead of AC Milan and qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2003. Tommaso Rocchi was Lazio's top scorer with sixteen goals. At the end of the season, veteran goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi announced his retirement and captain Massimo Oddo left for Milan in January.
