The Spartans finished the non–conference season at 11–3 and ranked number 14 in the country. After losing their first Big Ten game to Wisconsin, the Spartans won the remaining 15 games in conference to win the conference with a record of 15–1 and 26–4 overall. The Spartans earned the number 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and went on to win the tournament, beating Illinois. The Spartans were awarded the number 1 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament. After wins over Mount St. Mary's and Mississippi, they advanced to their second straight Sweet Sixteen. With a win over Oklahoma and Kentucky in the Elite Eight, the Spartans advanced to their first Final Four since 1979. There, they were re-matched against the overall number 1 seed, Duke. The Spartans 22 game winning streak ended as Duke defeated the Spartans.
