- 19–20 March - MV Mi Amigo, the ship from which the pirate radio station Radio Caroline is broadcast, runs aground and sinks off the Thames Estuary.
- 21 July - Simon Bates presents the first Our Tune feature on Radio 1.
- December - Dave Lee Travis presents his final edition of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show after two and a half years at the helm.
