The 1979 NCAA Men's Division I Ice Hockey Hockey Tournament involved in playing single-elimination play to determine the national championship of NCAA Division 1 . The tournament began on March 18, 1979. The semifinals began on March 22, 1979, and March 23, 1979. The National Championship Game was March 24, 1979. A total of 4 games were played. The quarterfinal game was played in the hockey section of Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with the semi-finals and Championship played at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan. Minnesota won their third NCAA championship, defeating North Dakota.
