    1659 Punkaharju, provisional designation 1940 YL, is an eccentric, stony asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, about 31 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered by Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at Turku Observatory on 28 December 1940.[11]

    The asteroid orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.1–3.5 AU once every 4 years and 8 months (1,698 days). Its orbit shows an eccentricity of 0.26 and is tilted by 16 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic. It has a well-determined rotation period of 5.0 hours.[7][8][9][10] The S-type asteroid has an albedo in the range of 0.17–0.27, according to several surveys carried out by the IRAS, Akari, WISE and NEOWISE missions.[4][5][6]

    It is named after the former municipality of Punkaharju, a well-known and beautiful isthmus region in southeastern Finland (also see Karelian Isthmus).[2]
