Æneas, Baron Mackay Jr. (29 November 1838 – 13 November 1909) was a Dutch Anti-Revolutionary politician. He served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1888 to 1891.
History
Mackay was born in Nijmegen on 29 November 1839, into a noble family of Scottish origin. He attended a gymnasium in Nijmegen and studied Roman and Contemporary Law in Utrecht. In 1862, Mackay became a lawyer and worked as one until 1865.
On 2 May 1876, Mackay was elected into the House of Representatives, and remained in the House for Amersfoort and later for Utrecht until 1888, serving as President of House of Representatives from 1884 to 1885. In the House, he was concerned with a variety of policy areas, including justice, education, colonies and suffrage. Mackay served as Minister of the Interior from 1888 to 1890, and as Minister of Colonies from 1890 to 1891. He also served as chairman of the council of ministers, or Prime Minister, from 1888 to 1891, when he was succeeded by Gijsbert van Tienhoven. Mackay returned to the House of Representatives, staying there for Kampen until 1905, and serving a second term as President of House from 1901 to 1905.
He died in The Hague on 13 November 1909, at the age of 70.[1]
