Born in Italy, probably in the city of Genova, on one of the trips that their parents Juan Manuel Canaveris and Carmen Gutiérrez did for Europe. Canaveris by mother's side was grandson of Doctor Juan Gutiérrez Moreno.[2]
In 1873, Canaveris settled in Montevideo where his mother was a native.[3] He was one of the first psychiatrists who had in Mental Hospital of Uruguay.[4] In 1879, Canaveris proposed a regulation whereby the foreman should monitor that nurses do not give mistreatment of psychiatric patients. The regulation stated that patients should be contained with good manners.[5]
