Zoo is one of James Patterson's books that is not in a series. It can be considered a work of science fiction or a thriller novel.[4]

Plot

This novel centers around Jackson Oz, who is looked upon as an outcast among the professional and academic ecologists and biologists. Oz had been trying for years to get ecologists and biologists to listen to data he had been collecting on increasing numbers of mammal attacks on humans. Oz became so obsessed with this that he quit graduate school to devote himself full-time to collect data and argue his case. Finally, on a trip to Botswana, he has to survive an attack by a large band of male lions in which about 100 people are killed in a large geographic area. He saves the life of ecologist Chloe Tousignant, who graduated from École Polytechnique, and together they seek to warn the world that something has caused mammals of all types to band together in what seems to be an orchestrated effort to eliminate humans. The balance of this novel sees Oz gaining respect for his data and sees world leaders taking misguided actions to solve the problem, only to see even worse mammal attacks threatening the existence of man.

Reviews

Zoo is reviewed by the public online in a number of websites, including Good Reads and Amazon.com. Three professional reviews online exist. Two rate the novel somewhat positive and one rates it very positive. The review in the Hutchinson Leader online website, somewhat positive, says, "It's a page turner that's for sure. The ending is sort of lame, but overall I enjoyed it."[5] The second somewhat positive review is in the Publishers Weekly website. This review, of a CD version of this book, says, "While the book’s conclusion may strain credulity…Oz presents his case so positively and persuasively that it’s not until the final disc plays—when all the dogs and cats and rats have returned to their natural states—that anyone is likely to care."[6]

The Bookreporter.com website rates Zoo as very positive, saying, "What is really chilling about ZOO is its plausibility. You may not agree with all of the points of view presented here, but at the very least it will keep you reading—and thinking—from first page to last."[7]

Television adaptation

A 13-episode television adaptation of Zoo is expected to premiere on CBS in summer 2015.[8] James Wolk will play Oz.[9] Nora Arnezeder will play Chloe.[10]
