Woo Ji Ho (Korean: 우지호; born September 14, 1992), better known by the stage name Zico (Korean: 지코), is a South Korean rapper. He is the leader of Korean hip hop boy group Block B.[1] He is notable for his successful crossover skills, maintaining an underground reputation with mainstream hip hop appeal and Korean idol status, as well as producing successful K-pop music.[2][3][4]

Career

Pre-debut

Early life

Zico was born in Mapo, Seoul on September 14, 1992.[1] Zico attended Seoul Music High School as a "Vocal Performance Major."[5] In the lyrics of his song "Release," he mentioned that he spent a year studying abroad in both Canada and China, as well as three years in Japan.[6] His brother Taewoon joined the Korean entertainment industry in 2010 in the male group "SPEED."

Early Underground Rapping Career

Zico started his rapping career by promoting underground. In his early teenage years he went by the name "Nacseo" (낙서), meaning 'doodle' or 'scribble' in Korean. He and Rap Monster were part of a hip-hop crew.[7][8] He promoted as Nacseo in the Japanese underground hip hop scene alongside crews "Dope Squad" and "Undisputed."[9] Zico has confirmed he auditioned for SM Entertainment as a teen.[10]

Zico officially debuted in a duo with Park Kyung named "The Harmonics" in Korea in 2009 with the digital single "The Letter."[9] He joined Stardom Entertainment in 2009 as well.[11] Zico performed a rap for singer IU's song "Marshmallow." He also performed in Cho PD’s “Expectations for K-Hip Hop,” and Jung Seul Gi’s “Outsiders.”[12]

In 2010 Zico released his first mix tape, "Zico on the Block." The mix tape was well received by the Korean hiphop scene.[13]

Zico debuted as the leader of Block B on April 15, 2011 with their first promotional single "Freeze." Zico had produced their debut mini-album "Welcome to the Block."[14] The Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and public broadcast channel KBS banned the songs "LOL" and "Did You or Did You Not" from minors. When asked about the banning, Zico said:

"It's not that we don't consider the regulations when we're producing the songs, but I did often think that our freedom of expression was being interrupted. Still, I do acknowledge that as as a producer that creates songs meant for the public, it was a shortcoming of mine to not have paid more attention to the regulations."
Zico, Welcome to the Block Showcase Q&A[15]

Zico was featured in Hyuna's debut mini-album "Bubble Pop!" in the song "Just Follow."[12] He promoted with her on Korean music shows from July to August.[16] Zico attended the MTV EMAs in Ireland.[17] On November 27, Zico began hosting the SBS-MTV interactive radio show "Studio C!" with rap duo Mighty Mouth.[18] Zico made an appearance at Swings's "It's My Year II" concert, performing "I'm Still Fly" and "Cocks."[19]

Zico made an appearance in girl group Wink's song "Stay in Shanghai" on Inkigayo on February 19.[20] Zico performed at the "All Force One" hip hop festival on July 21 alongside artists Dok2 and Beenzino.[21] On October 24, Zico was chosen as co-host of SBS-MTV's "The Show" with Block B member P.O.[22][23] In the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards he participated in a hip hop collaboration called "Beats Rocks The World" with artists such as Loco(로꼬), DoubleK, Davichi, and Dynamic Duo.[24] In October Zico released a self-produced mixtape called "Zico On The Block 1.5," containing seven tracks.[25][26] Zico made a cameo appearance in Sistar's Soyou & the Geeks collaborative track "Officially Missing You Too"'s music video.[27] In December it was announced that Zico was helping to produce D-Unit's third mini-album.[28] In 2012 Zico also entered Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts as a freshman in the "drama" major.[29]

2013

Zico performed at Phantom's concert on May 17 and ONE Hiphop Festival on September 7.[30]

In August Zico was dissed in Deepflow(딥플로우)'s response track to a Control-esque track by Swings(스윙스).[31] Zico and Jay Park were accused of only being in hip hop for the money.[32] Later, rapper Aphelia created a diss track called "Zicontrol" specifically speaking of his frustration with Zico's guaranteed popularity as an idol versus the difficulty of being a hip hop artist alone.[33][34] Dead'P(데드피), in the track "Rap Game Control," also spoke about the frustration of idols portraying themselves as "hip hop" and the integration of mainstream K-pop culture into the underground hiphop scene.[35]

On October 18, Zico, along with fellow Block B member P.O, participated in the 2014 Spring/Summer Seoul Fashion Week. They both walked the runway in a fashion show for the brand "Dominic's Way" by designer Song Hye-myung (송혜명).[36] He was featured in IZE magazine in the November issue.[37] On November 17 Zico publicly tweeted about how the intrusion of sasaeng fans into his life forced him to constantly change his phone number to avoid their communications.[38] Zico performed at SBS Gayo Daejeon 2013 as part of a collaborative hip-hop stage featuring Tiger JK, Yoon Mirae, and Bizzy and also including B.A.P.'s Bang Yongguk and Eun Jiwon.[39]

2014

In late May, following the Sewol Ferry Disaster, Zico attended the funeral of a fan who had died in the incident and dedicated a rap to her at Block B's "2014 Blockbuster" Concert.[40][41]

In June T-ara's Hyomin released the Brave Brothers-produced mini-album "Make Up" which allegedly plagiarized lyrics from Zico's various mix tapes and previous releases. She denied the allegations saying they were a homage and that she had permission from Zico to use his lyrics. She did not credit him as a songwriter on her mini-album.[42][43]

Zico appeared with Crush on MBC FM4U's Tablo's Dreaming Radio on July 9.[44] He mentioned that Gaeko had originally invited him to appear on his track "Feel so good," but because Zico had been in the middle of the legal dispute with Stardom Entertainment, he had to decline.[45]

On July 14 Zico was confirmed to be a new MC of Show! Music Core, a music television program on MBC.[46][47] Zico is a cast member on Fashion King Korea Season 2 which began airing in July.[48] Zico was a headliner at the "2014 Freestyle Day" concert held August 2 at Uniqlo Ax.[49] He also participated on a special stage with Dynamic Duo for the M! Countdown "10th Anniversary Special," performing the song "Friday Night."[50] He produced music for Go Tae Yong's 2015 S/S show at New York Fashion Week September 9 and will be further collaborating with him for Seoul Fashion Week.[51] Zico headlined "The Hiphop Festa" with Dok2, The Quiett, and Simon D on October 4.[52] He also performed at the "Hiphopplaya Show Weekend," a Korean hip hop festival at the Itaewon Blue Square on October 31.[53] Zico emceed the 2014 Asia Song Festival with Super Junior's Leeteuk and Girl's Day's Minah.[54] He also performed a collaborative stage at that festival with Beast's Hyunseung.[55]

On November 7 Zico released a "debut" single entitled "Tough Cookie" featuring the rapper Don Mills.[56] He was criticized for wearing a jacket emblazoned with an American Confederate flag in the single's accompanying music video and the use of a homophobic slur in the song's lyrics.[57] Zico's label officially addressed the issue saying the homophobic implication of the term had been unintended and that Zico held no prejudice towards sexual minorities.[58] The song immediately reached the top of many real-time Korean music charts.[59]

Zico performed a collaborative stage with Seo Taiji for the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards, performing the Seo Taiji and Boys' song "Come Back Home."[60]

2015

On February 13, 2015, Zico released "Well Done," his second single, featuring Ja Mezz.[61] The song topped various real-time Korean music charts on the day of its release.[62] In March, Zico provided the track list for Beyond Closet's 2015 S/S runway at New York Fashion Week.[63] He also joined the cast of the female rap competition show Unpretty Rapstar as a producer.[64]
