Zhang Xizhe (Chinese: 张稀哲; pinyin: Zhāng Xīzhé; born 23 January 1991) is a Chinese footballer who currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
Club career
Beijing Guoan
Zhang Xizhe started his football career with Beijing Guoan in the 2009 season where he made his debut on 30 August 2009 in a league match against Shandong Luneng coming on a late substitute for Yang Hao in a 1-1 draw.[1] The following season, in an attempt to gain more playing time, Zhang was loaned to S.League side Beijing Guoan Talent in 2010.[2] He scored his first senior league goal on his first appearance in a 3-1 away win against Geylang United on 12 March 2010.[3] He would return to Beijing in July 2010 and go on to score his first for the club when he scored two goals in a league match against Henan Jianye on 22 August 2010 in a 2-2 draw.[4] As he grew in experience, he also won the Chinese Football Association Young Player of the Year award in the 2012 season. The 2013 season was Zhang's breakout season for Beijing, scoring eleven goals and assisting twelve goals in thirty league games.
VfL Wolfsburg
On 16 December 2014, Zhang transferred to Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg after yet another successful season for Beijing Guoan, following in the footsteps of Hao Junmin, Shao Jiayi and Yang Chen who all had previously played in the Bundesliga.[5][6] Zhang made his unofficial debut for Wolfsburg during a winter training camp in South Africa as he came off the bench to assist Bas Dost's second goal in a 4-1 win against Ajax Cape Town.[7]
International career
Zhang would be called up to the Chinese under-20 national team squad in 2009 and would take part in the 2010 AFC U-19 Championship qualifying campaign where he scored two goals from five appearances. At the 2010 AFC U-19 Championship, he would go on to play in every game and see China lose in the quarter-finals at the tournament. On 29 March 2011, then manager Gao Hongbo decided to hand Zhang his international debut in a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica in an experimental team that also saw Lang Zheng, Jin Jingdao, Lü Peng, Ma Chongchong and Ye Weichao make their first appearances.[8] He scored his first goal for China on 6 September 2013 in a 6-1 win against Singapore.[9] On 5 March 2014, Zhang scored a penalty in the final match of 2015 AFC Asian Cup qualification in a 3-1 loss against Iraq which ensured that China advanced to the 2015 AFC Asian Cup as the best third-placed team, beating Lebanon on goal differential.[10]
